Chapter 79
The banknotes hit her face, falling to the ground again.
Shawn’s anger was palpable as he threw the remaining money at her. “As soon as I turned around, you went to your old lover for help!”
Gale’s breath caught in her throat as she scrambled to explain, her voice trembling. “I didn’t look for Sam. I just happened to meet him.”
“Coincidence? Is it just a coincidence?!” Shawn’s eyes were burning with rage. He kicked the coffee table in front of him with one foot and stood up suddenly. “This is the money I gave to the hospital, Gale! Why did you take it out?”
“Because it’s useless if you pay for it. The doctor won’t prescribe medicine without my permission!” Gale’s body shook as she spoke, the weight of her situation crashing down on her.
She had managed to collect the money with so much effort, believing she could ease her mother’s suffering—but Shawn stopped her.
He was too powerful.
Gale looked at him, her voice raw with desperation. “Can’t you be a little soft-hearted? Just for once, have some sympathy for me…”
She wanted so badly for him to have a moment of kindness, to spare her just once, to let her not suffer so much. But she knew deep down that Shawn would never show her mercy.
“Who do you think you are?” he sneered, his tone biting. “Gale, have you forgotten your identity after marrying me?”
Gale’s breath hitched. “I know… I know I’m the enemy of your family, and I’m here to make amends…” Her voice faltered, the words hard to say.
“But Shawn, no matter how much you torture me, I suffer without complaint. My mother is innocent. She finally woke up, and I wanted her to take the medicine and slowly recover, to stay with me for a few more years. Can’t I just be a normal person with a mother?”
Tears fell, her voice breaking as she spoke. In front of Shawn, she had always tried to remain patient, not willing to show weakness. But now, she couldn’t hold it back anymore.
She squatted down, her hands trembling as she picked up the money from the floor, each note a reminder of the cruelty she was facing.
Shawn could throw it away, trample on her dignity, but she didn’t care about the money. It was her mother’s health that mattered.
Shawn’s leather shoe crushed her hand as she reached for the last note, his voice cold and cruel. “The child in your belly belongs to Sam, right?”
“No,” she said quickly, shaking her head, her eyes avoiding his. “Do you think I will believe it?”
“Believe it or not,” Gale whispered, voice steady despite the storm in her chest. “Let go. This is my money.”
Shawn grabbed her by the arm, pulling her forcefully from the ground, forcing her to meet his eyes. “Yours? Gale, what do you have? You eat my food, wear my clothes, and live under my roof. Even your cheap life is mine!”
Tears blurred her vision as she looked up at him. “What do you want from me?”
“Stop borrowing money. It’s useless. Only I can pay the hospital.”
Gale’s voice was quiet but firm. “I want my child, and I want my mother too.”
Shawn’s lips twisted into a cruel smile. “People who are too greedy often get nothing. Gale, if you want both, the end result will only be… you get nothing.”
Her tears splashed on the back of his hand. He frowned in disgust and wiped them away, as if she were nothing more than an inconvenience.
“You really don’t get anything. I’ll make sure this child dies, and you can’t afford the medical bills,” Shawn said, his voice colder than ice.
He turned and walked past her, leaving her standing in the midst of the wreckage.
Gale’s heart shattered as she stared at the money scattered across the floor, knowing that no amount would save her mother now. She could do nothing, not even buy the medicine that could save her life.
The roar of Shawn’s sports car echoed through the house before fading into the distance. He was gone.
Gale sank to the floor slowly, hugging her knees to her chest, her face buried in her arms. Alone again, she couldn’t hold back the tears any longer. She cried in silence, too afraid to make a sound, as the weight of everything she had lost pressed down on her.
