Chapter 55
Soon, the sound of an ambulance siren filled the air as Dean was rushed to the hospital. Susan’s eyes blazed with fury as she pointed a trembling finger at Gale. “It’s you who killed my dad!” she screamed, her voice sharp with accusation. “If anything happens to him, I won’t let you go!”
“I didn’t do anything…” Gale protested, her voice steady despite the chaos.
“You’re still arguing? There’s surveillance here! It’s all on video, and you can’t escape!” Susan snapped.
Gale’s mind raced, her unease growing. “Fine, check the surveillance footage. I’m innocent,” she said, though something about Susan’s sudden, strange smile made her stomach churn. It felt like a trap, but she couldn’t quite figure out what it was just yet.
A moment later, Shawn arrived, his cold eyes scanning Gale briefly before he turned his attention to Susan.
“Mr. Wood!” Susan ran to him, her tears flowing as she sobbed. “My dad worked so hard to raise me. He should be enjoying his life, but now…” she trailed off, overcome with emotion.
Shawn’s face remained unreadable. “What’s going on?”
Susan, still crying, replied in between sobs, “My dad said Gale is now Mrs. Wood, that her identity is different from before. Meanwhile, I’m just here with no title. So he wanted to give Gale a gift, just a gesture. But after only a few minutes of meeting her, my dad suddenly collapsed!”
She turned to Gale accusingly. “The dean brought a gift for her, and Gale rejected it. I don’t know what happened after that. Maybe if you had just accepted the gift, none of this would have happened!”
Gale tried to explain, “I didn’t want it! I didn’t know what was going on!”
“This isn’t the time to discuss that!” Susan interrupted, her voice rising. “I’m going to the hospital now. President Wood, come with me. Gale, you’re coming too. You’re the one who caused this!”
In the hospital’s emergency room, Susan clung to Shawn, her body shaking with tears and frustration. Gale stood to the side, feeling the tension of the situation weighing on her.
After what felt like an eternity, the door to the operating room finally opened, and the doctor stepped out, his face grim.
“How is my dad?” Susan rushed forward to meet him.
The doctor sighed deeply, adjusting his glasses. “He suffered a sudden cerebral hemorrhage. We are still trying to save him.”
“How could this happen?” Susan demanded, her voice shaky.
“It was likely caused by an emotional shock,” the doctor explained. “The patient is elderly and has high blood pressure.”
Susan turned to Gale, her eyes filled with venom. “It’s you! You were so cruel to him that he had a hemorrhage!”
The doctor nodded. “The surgery went well, but… there’s a problem. The hospital’s blood bank is out of stock, and the patient needs a transfusion. Do any of you have a matching blood type?”
Susan’s gaze immediately turned to Gale.
At that moment, Gale finally understood. The entire situation had been set up to manipulate her. They wanted her blood, and with her pregnancy, any significant blood loss could put the child at risk.
Her body went cold as she instinctively started to step back, her mind racing. But before she could move further, Shawn’s hand shot out, gripping hers tightly. She froze, feeling a jolt of fear course through her.
“Gale,” Shawn said in a cold, detached tone, “you will be responsible for the consequences of your actions.”
His words cut through her like ice. There was no warmth, no compassion in his eyes. “It has nothing to do with me. I didn’t do this.”
Susan’s voice was frantic as she turned on Gale. “My dad has been fine for years! Why did he have a brain hemorrhage after seeing you?” She looked at the doctor. “What if he dies without blood?”
The doctor didn’t answer, but the urgency was clear.
“Are you going to let my father die?” Susan continued, her voice breaking with emotion.
Gale opened her mouth to respond, but before she could speak, Susan dropped to her knees in front of her, her hands clasped together in desperation. “Please, Gale, save my father. He’s the only family I have left. I can’t lose him. Please, just donate your blood. For me.”
Gale stood frozen, her heart pounding in her chest. It was a cruel twist of fate.
