Chapter 44
Summer put down her utensils and shot Susan a sarcastic look. “Why is it you again? You should learn to stay in the shadows when you’re a mistress.”
Susan raised her chin proudly. “Hey, I’m the future proprietress of the Wood family. What’s wrong with walking around the cafeteria?”
She then glanced at Gale, a smug smile playing on her lips. “You like the gift I gave you last night, right?”
Gale clenched her fists, disgusted. “Despicable and shameless.”
Susan laughed triumphantly. “Hahahaha. Take it as a warning. Gale, be more polite to me in the future!”
Gale had no intention of engaging with her any further. “Well, let’s go.”
Summer jumped in, playing along. “Okay. There’s a dog barking here, and it’s affecting my appetite.”
Susan, still trying to assert her dominance, casually raised her hand to brush her hair, deliberately revealing the jade bracelet on her wrist. After a brief moment, she quickly lowered her hand, ensuring that Gale saw it.
“Gale, don’t overstep your boundaries,” Susan warned, her voice laced with venom.
Sure enough, Gale couldn’t help but take a step forward. “That jade bracelet…”
“President Wood gave it to me,” Susan bragged, her tone full of superiority. “He bought it for me. Do you think you can still have it?”
Gale felt a knot tighten in her chest, but she forced herself to endure. “Jade symbolizes spirituality. Since you’re its owner now, treat it well.”
Susan scoffed. “It’s my jade bracelet, and I can do whatever I want. You don’t get to tell me what to do. Even if I break it… President Wood won’t blame me!”
Summer, fed up, gave Susan a cutting look. “Are you leaving? I’ve already called the security guard. The company has regulations about outsiders staying here.”
“What?” Susan shot her an angry look.
“Three, two, one… Guard!” Summer said with a smug smile.
Susan, furious, stomped her feet. “I’m leaving! Bye!”
As she passed by Gale, Susan deliberately shook her wrist, flaunting the jade bracelet one last time before leaving.
But the truth was, the jade bracelet wasn’t even in Susan’s hands. Shawn had locked it away in the safe at Temperley Hall. Susan had bought a fake one to taunt Gale and appease her own insecurity.
Seeing that Gale was uncomfortable, Susan couldn’t hide her satisfaction.
In the corridor, Gale sighed. “I’m sorry. I ruined your day.”
Summer, who came from a powerful family, was beautiful and had a hot temper. She had always been fiercely independent. “Aren’t you angry?” Summer asked, her voice a little softer. “You, Gale, used to be the daughter of the Warm family, the darling of the school, the little princess of the stars, holding the moon! What happened to you?”
Gale lowered her gaze. “Now… it’s good to be alive.”
Summer paused for a moment. “Gale, what exactly have you experienced? Can you tell me about it?”
Gale stayed silent for a few seconds before nodding. She explained her past struggles in detail. Summer, moved to tears, listened intently, her heart breaking for her friend.
“It’s okay. It’s all over now,” Gale said, wiping away her own tears. “Look, I’m standing in front of you now, intact.”
Just then, Joe walked out of the elevator and froze when he saw the scene. “What’s going on? Who can make Summer cry?”
“It’s me,” Gale replied helplessly. “Mr. Winter, I’ll leave her to you. I still have a design draft to submit.”
Joe looked confused, glancing between Summer and Gale. “I don’t know how to coax women either!”
Summer sniffled, wiping her eyes. Joe awkwardly looked at her, unsure how to handle the situation. Normally, she was the one who was stronger than him, but now she was in tears, and it threw him off.
“Well, then… don’t cry,” Joe mumbled, rubbing her head. “You’re like a little bitch.”
“I am a woman, Mr. Winter!” Summer retorted, not impressed.
“Okay, okay, I understand.” Joe smirked and leaned in closer. “Let me tell you a secret.”
Summer paused, taking a deep breath. “What?”
Joe’s gleeful expression said it all. “I found out everything between Joe and Gale. It took a lot of work!”
Summer raised an eyebrow. “Not surprised.”
Joe was eager to spill the beans. “Why?”
“Because she told me just now.”
