Chapter 28
Gale couldn’t help but sneer as she listened to Susan’s words. Would Susan truly apologize? That would be as likely as the sun rising from the west.
Besides, Shawn would never allow Susan to show any real remorse. After all, Susan was the woman he loved. That much was obvious.
Sure enough, Shawn’s response came coldly. “Have you done anything wrong?”
Susan hesitated before replying, her voice laced with false sincerity. “Well, I shouldn’t have gone to your company and kidnapped her. It was selfish… I got carried away by jealousy. I love you so much, Shawn.”
She continued, her tone heavy with dramatic flair. “We are destined to be together. Fate made us meet that night. But Gale… she’s your righteous wife. I feel so sad.”
Her words dripped with venom disguised as longing. “The thought of her sharing your bed, eating with you—it drives me crazy. I can’t stand that she has everything I should have. Everything that was mine.”
“I was just trying to vent my anger… Fortunately, you came in time!” Susan reached out, grabbing Shawn’s arm, shaking it gently as if pleading for understanding. “Otherwise, I might have made a huge mistake!”
Gale watched the scene unfold, her eyes narrowing in disbelief. The words were sugar-coated with all the charm of a woman scorned, yet Gale knew better. It was all an act. A calculated display to win back Shawn’s favor.
Shawn seemed to soften under her words, the façade of indifference slipping as he glanced at Susan. After a moment of hesitation, he sighed, clearly conflicted. “Get up,” he commanded, extending a hand to her.
“Thank you, President Wood!” Susan beamed, her joy radiating like a child receiving praise.
Susan’s expression turned serious. “I promise, I’ll never embarrass you again. I’ll wait patiently for you to marry me.”
Shawn simply nodded, his gaze distant. Susan’s face lit up in triumph as she ran off toward Gale.
Before Shawn could say anything, she was already on her way, her steps light with excitement.
Gale instinctively took a step back when she saw Susan approaching, her suspicion rising. “What tricks have you come up with now?” she asked, her voice guarded.
Susan blinked innocently, her demeanor shifting to one of pure sweetness. “I’m here to apologize. Mr. Wood is watching.”
“Are you going to apologize to me sincerely?” Gale asked, her voice tinged with skepticism.
Susan smiled, her expression entirely different from the cruel woman who had kicked Gale in the stomach earlier. “Yes, I’m standing here in front of you, aren’t I?”
Gale raised an eyebrow, not buying the act. She knew Susan’s game.
Susan’s tone softened, her words laced with false humility. “I’m sorry, Gale. I shouldn’t have been so aggressive today. My father scolded me, and President Wood punished me.”
Gale’s eyes narrowed. “You really—”
“Shh.” Susan put a finger to her lips, her expression turning feigned sorrowful. “Listen to me. I was just so anxious. After all, you’re also a nominal Mrs. Wood.”
Gale’s jaw clenched. She had had enough. “Why are you targeting me? Shawn promised to marry you and divorce me. What more do you want?”
Susan approached slowly, her smile widening as she moved closer. Gale instinctively took a step back, but before she could retreat any further, Susan grabbed her arm, pulling her closer. “Don’t worry,” Susan said, her voice dripping with venom. “There are too many eyes on us right now. I won’t hurt you.”
Gale’s pulse quickened, her mind racing. “What do you want, Susan?”
Susan’s eyes gleamed with malice as she whispered, “I just want to tell you a secret.”
“I don’t want to hear it,” Gale replied, her voice shaking with apprehension.
“Are you sure?” Susan sighed dramatically, feigning regret. “It seems like you have something evil in your stomach, something you’re desperately trying to hide.”
Gale’s heart skipped a beat. She froze, her hand instinctively rising to cover her mouth. Could it be? Susan knew about the pregnancy!
The shock hit Gale like a wave. How could Susan possibly know?
Susan smirked as she watched Gale’s reaction, her voice low and mocking. “Are you afraid? You don’t want anyone to know your little secret, do you?”
Gale’s thoughts whirled. How could she have found out? And why was Susan threatening her like this?
The tension between them hung thick in the air. Gale felt a cold sweat break out across her skin, fear tightening her chest.
