Chapter 39
“Are you trying to cause a scene again?” Susan shoved Gale away with force. “Mr. Wood wants to buy me a gift. Stop trying to control what he does!”
“Susan, you don’t deserve that jade bracelet!” Gale snapped back, her voice shaking with frustration.
Before Susan could respond, Shawn’s calm voice interrupted. “Gale, is this jade bracelet really that important to you?”
Gale was caught off guard. She rarely showed such emotion, always keeping a composed demeanor. This outburst was unlike her.
“Yes,” she replied quietly, her voice thick with emotion. “It’s my mother’s…”
Her voice faltered, the weight of her words pressing on her chest.
“I see,” Shawn said with a cool expression. “Then, I want to buy it even more.”
Gale clenched her skirt tightly, her palms slick with sweat. After Shawn won the bracelet, he’d never give it to her. He despised the Warm family too much.
“Do whatever you want,” Gale muttered, her voice barely above a whisper. “But please, don’t give it to Susan.”
Shawn sneered, a cold smile curling on his lips. “I can do whatever I want.”
Gale felt the crushing weight of hopelessness settle over her.
“Six hundred thousand going once, six hundred thousand going twice…” The auctioneer’s voice rang out. “Is there another bid?”
Without hesitation, Sam raised his bidding card. “One million.”
Shawn’s voice was calm and confident. “One million and three hundred.”
Sam hesitated, glancing at Gale. She shook her head slightly, her eyes filled with sorrow. “It’s useless. Don’t waste your time. You can’t compete with Shawn.”
Sam’s jaw clenched, but he didn’t argue. He understood how much the bracelet meant to Gale, but just then, his phone buzzed with a message. He glanced at it, reading the text that flashed across his screen: Don’t go against President Wood! I just froze your bank card!
Sam swallowed hard, his heart sinking. He didn’t have a choice.
“Okay, one million and three hundred! Deal!” the auctioneer declared, hammering down his gavel. “Congratulations to Mr. Wood!”
Susan’s face lit up with a satisfied smile. She was already imagining the headlines the next day—Mr. Wood buys jade bracelet for his girlfriend, spending millions to make her smile!
The auctioneer carefully placed the jade bracelet on a tray and handed it to him. Gale squeezed her eyes shut, fighting back the tears. She turned and walked away quickly, unable to bear witnessing Shawn putting the bracelet on Susan’s wrist.
Once she was out of sight, Gale found a quiet spot to hide and let the tears fall freely. She cried silently, wishing she could turn back time.
After a while, Gale wiped her tears away, trying to compose herself. She couldn’t let anyone see how much it hurt.
As she left the restroom, she found Sam waiting outside. He handed her a tissue without saying a word.
“Thanks,” Gale murmured, her voice strained.
“I couldn’t just stand by and do nothing,” Sam said, his voice full of reproach. “Shawn still got the jade bracelet in the end.”
Gale lowered her head, trying to keep her emotions in check. “Wasn’t that expected?”
Sam’s voice softened. “Gale, no matter what, he is your husband. He should have…”
Gale cut him off, her voice tinged with bitterness. “You know how much Shawn hates my family.”
