Chapter 73
Perhaps, a woman was always destined to fight alone in her life.
Gale could only respond quietly, her voice barely above a whisper, “I don’t know who he is. I didn’t even… didn’t even see his face clearly.”
Shawn’s sneer cut through the air, his voice dripping with contempt. “You really are good at lying, aren’t you? Spinning your tales, I see how outrageous your lies can be.”
“It’s the truth! I’m not lying!” Gale’s voice trembled, but she refused to back down.
“You didn’t even know who he was, and yet you let him… do that to you?” Shawn’s words stung, each one harder than the last.
Gale gritted her teeth, humiliated by the accusations. “I was trapped…” she whispered, her voice cracking.
“You were framed,” Shawn mocked, his voice dripping with sarcasm. “Oh yes, you’re innocent, aren’t you? Pure and untouched.” His words were like daggers, each one cutting deeper. “Five weeks pregnant… Gale, at that time, you were still in the mental hospital. Tell me, which wild man did you go off with?”
Her breath caught in her throat as she tried to explain. “I really didn’t…”
Shawn’s glare was merciless. “Were you some lowly woman who sold her body for a better life?”
Her past, the purity he had once believed in, seemed like a distant dream now. The truth he was hearing made him sick to his stomach. He had thought she was pure, but now he could see how easily she had deceived him. He had almost believed her, but now everything felt like a lie.
Gale’s hand trembled as she bit her tongue to stay alert, the pain keeping her focused. “I’ve already told you. It only happened that one time, that night. I didn’t know who the man was… He won’t even remember me. If you don’t believe me, I can’t help it.”
“The devil will believe you!” Shawn hissed, his rage a consuming fire.
Without another word, he opened the car door and yanked Gale out, dragging her across the ground like she was nothing more than a ragdoll. Her body scraped against the rough pavement, her skin burning with the friction.
Gale tried desperately to stand, but she couldn’t keep up with his furious pace. With each faltering step, she collapsed back to the ground, unable to regain her footing. Despite the pain, she still protected her stomach with one hand, her baby the only thing on her mind. She would protect it at all costs, no matter what.
But her insistence only made Shawn angrier. How dare she value the child over her own life? How dare she protect the “villainous” baby like that?
“Where are you taking me?” Gale gasped, struggling to keep her feet under her. “Could it be… the hospital?”
Shawn’s voice was cold, like ice. “You guessed it. Gale, you’re going to get rid of the child in your stomach.”
His words were sharp, filled with rage and jealousy. He couldn’t bear the thought of this child, of her betrayal. The desire to make her suffer surged within him. He wanted her to regret it a hundred times over.
“No, I’m not going!” Gale cried, her voice breaking.
She began to fight him in earnest, her body twisting and jerking as she tried to resist. But Shawn’s strength was overwhelming. No matter how hard she dug her feet into the ground, how much she fought, she couldn’t stop him.
Her nails broke from the strain, but still, he dragged her forward, unstoppable.
“No, please… Shawn… No…” Gale’s words were desperate, her voice choking on the sobs she could barely hold back.
The security guards, housekeepers, and servants watched from a distance, too frightened to intervene. Who would dare to challenge Shawn in this moment? No one could risk poking the hornet’s nest.
Just as they were about to leave Temperley Hall, a car slowly approached. Shawn paused, looking up, and Gale quickly stood from the ground, dusting herself off, hoping for some kind of miracle.
The car stopped, and Shawn’s grandfather stepped out, leaning heavily on his crutches. He smiled when he saw them. “What a coincidence, you’re both here. Shawn, did you take Gale to the hospital for a check-up?”
Shawn’s lips pressed into a thin line, but he said nothing in response.
“Why so quiet? Don’t be discouraged if you’re not pregnant. Just keep trying. If you’re pregnant, just tell me already. Don’t leave me hanging. Come on, Gale, come over and tell me,” Grandpa said, his tone light but curious.
Gale lowered her head, feeling the weight of the moment.
Just then, a gust of evening wind swept through the air, and the pregnancy test sheet that had fallen beside the car fluttered up, carried by the breeze.
Shawn’s eyes locked on the paper as it flew through the air, landing softly in front of him. His gaze turned to ice as the truth hit him with full force.
