Chapter 86
The housekeeper’s tone was matter-of-fact as he spoke, “Well, when the day comes, we’ll see.”
Susan, who was on the edge of losing her temper, was about to retort when the door to the dining hall opened. Shawn stepped out, his expression colder than ever.
“Tell the hospital to keep an eye on Wendy,” he ordered with a sharp tone. “Don’t allow Gale to approach her. If something goes wrong, you’ll be punished by me personally.”
The housekeeper hesitated for a moment, his voice laced with regret. “Mr. Wood, that medicine…”
“No!” Shawn snapped, cutting him off. His words were final.
The housekeeper sighed inwardly. Susan had been this close to succeeding. If she had arrived just a few minutes earlier, Wendy would have been able to take this month’s dose of medicine. But as it was, Susan’s interference had ruined the timing.
Susan couldn’t help but feel a surge of satisfaction. “Don’t pick the wrong side,” she said, her voice dripping with pride.
With that, she left the dining hall, her mood light and victorious. The storm that had been brewing with Shawn was far from over, but for now, she had secured a small victory.
When Shawn arrived at the company, his face was a storm cloud. The moment Fiona saw him, she knew something had gone terribly wrong. She had learned over time that reading Mr. Wood’s mood was as crucial as reading the weather forecast. And right now? The forecast was a thunderstorm.
Inside the president’s office, the atmosphere was thick with tension. Executives came in and out, and each of them was scolded harshly. Shawn’s mood had completely shattered the calm of the office. Even the fifth teacup, which had been brought in to replace the shattered ones from earlier, was promptly thrown against the wall.
A secretary, who had witnessed the chaos, whispered to Fiona, “Which side of the bed did he wake up on today?”
Fiona gave a weary smile. “I don’t know either. He was already like this when I got here.”
The secretary nodded. “Then everyone better be careful today.”
Fiona glanced around, making sure the team was on top of their work. “Do your jobs, and let the cleaning staff handle the broken teacups,” she instructed.
Inside the office, Shawn’s wrath reverberated throughout the building. Mr. Wood scolded the executives; the executives, in turn, yelled at the directors; and the directors unleashed their frustrations on the employees. It was a chain of fury, each person afraid of the one above them.
Gale sat quietly at her desk, her eyes lowered as she overheard her colleagues gossiping about Shawn. They spoke in hushed tones, but the weight of their words was clear.
“He’s so powerful… just his mood can make the whole company shake in fear.”
Gale couldn’t help but feel a pang of loneliness. What about her? Even though she worked tirelessly to provide for her mother, she couldn’t fight against Shawn’s influence. No matter how much money she had, she couldn’t buy the medicine her mother desperately needed.
She reached for her phone and sent Sam a quick message: I will pay you back in two days.
As soon as she sent it, Sam called. Gale stared at his name on the screen, but after a long moment, she couldn’t bring herself to answer.
Her relationship with Sam had ended. It was clear to her now that continuing to speak with him would only hurt him more. Their relationship, though once meaningful, had become a source of tension. She didn’t want to drag him deeper into this mess.
Sam didn’t give up. He sent her a flood of messages:
[Gale, has Auntie taken the medicine?]
[How is the situation?]
[When will you take me to see her?]
[Hey… answer me.]
The messages tugged at Gale’s heart, but she couldn’t bring herself to reply. She and Sam had tried everything to help her mother, but no matter how hard they fought, they were no match for Shawn’s power. The world, as it seemed, was his oyster. And they were left with nothing.
Suddenly, Fiona appeared at her desk. “Madam, Mr. Wood asked for you to come to his office,” she said.
“Oh, did he say why?” Gale asked, trying to keep her voice neutral.
Fiona shook her head, her expression unreadable.
Gale nodded slowly, standing up. She walked toward the president’s office, her colleagues whispering behind her. The words swirled in her ears.
“She’s going to Mr. Wood’s office now. Tsk tsk, wonder what she’s done.”
“Doesn’t she work for Lovito? Why does she go in and out of the president’s office so often?”
“Could it be… something between her and Mr. Wood?”
The gossip was heavy in the air, but Gale didn’t let it faze her. She had heard these rumors before, but she didn’t care. People could say whatever they wanted. For her, survival came first. She had more important things to worry about than the opinions of her colleagues.
As she approached the door to Shawn’s office, she steeled herself. No matter what happened next, she had to face it.
