Chapter 42
Gale crashed to the ground, and she felt a sharp, searing pain in her wrist.
Click.
Her bone was dislocated.
The excruciating pain made her break into a cold sweat. “Shawn, I really didn’t cheat on you…” she pleaded, her voice trembling.
“Shut up!” Shawn’s voice was full of fury as he ripped off his suit jacket and threw it on top of her, covering her exposed body. Only he was allowed to see her like this—he couldn’t stand the thought of anyone else seeing her.
But Sam had succeeded, damn it.
“Good for you. You’ve slept with your old lover,” Shawn spat, veins popping on his forehead as his rage intensified. “Gale, I really underestimated you!”
Sam, still regaining his consciousness, tried to explain urgently. “Mr. Wood, nothing happened between Gale and me. Please, don’t misunderstand!”
“You dare say I misunderstood when you’re lying naked in the same bed?” Shawn’s voice was sharp, like a whip.
Sam, trying to recall the events, said, “I don’t know what happened. I was at the auction, and then… I woke up here in the hotel room.”
His memory was a blur.
Sam tried to piece things together. “The waiter gave me a glass of wine. I drank it, and then I… blacked out.”
Shawn’s eyes narrowed, the suspicion still burning in him. “He’s drunk, so you came to take care of him?”
“No!” Gale cried out, desperate. “I didn’t even know Sam was in the room!”
“Then what are you doing?” Shawn snapped, his tone laced with venom.
Gale was momentarily at a loss for words. Her mind raced, but she couldn’t tell Shawn the truth. The truth was, she had gone there to find out who her child’s father was, but she couldn’t let Shawn know that.
“What? You mute now?” Shawn gripped her chin, forcing her to look at him as he demanded, “Answer me!”
Gale met his glare, her eyes red from holding back tears. “Nothing happened with Sam and me. Someone set me up! Shawn, if you don’t believe me, take me to the hospital. We’ll both get checked, and you’ll see I haven’t been touched by anyone tonight!”
Sam immediately agreed, desperate to clear the air. “I’ll go too. I’ll prove it.”
Gale nodded firmly, her voice unwavering. “Yes, let’s go. You’ll see the truth.”
Shawn’s eyes flicked back and forth between the two of them, studying them both with suspicion. Gale had always been submissive, but now, she was fighting back.
“Fine,” Shawn gritted through clenched teeth. “You better apologize. Don’t forget, your mother is still in my hands.”
He grabbed her shoulder and yanked her to her feet, dragging her toward the door. “Let’s go.”
“Gale!” Sam shouted, panicked, trying to catch up.
“Follow us if you want to die!” Shawn’s voice was cold as he marched out of the room, dragging Gale behind him.
At the hospital, the results came back quickly, confirming Gale’s words were true.
“I told you, Sam and I really didn’t do anything,” Gale said with a sigh of relief.
Shawn threw the report in her face, and it fluttered to the ground, landing at her feet. His face was twisted in anger as he spoke through gritted teeth. “Nothing happened because I didn’t have time to get there. Do you think the same would’ve happened if I had entered five minutes later, huh?”
Gale, unable to hold her frustration any longer, let out a bitter laugh. She met his eyes defiantly. “How could I be in contact with Sam? He’s my ex-fiancé who abandoned me for years to go abroad. Now, we’re competitors in business.”
Shawn’s words were cruel, stinging her to the core. “You, Gale, are a shameful woman. You’re so flirtatious!”
The harshness of his words pierced her heart like a thousand needles, crushing her self-esteem.
“You and Sam have been flirting with each other for so long,” Shawn continued, his voice dripping with contempt. “You think I’m blind? I leave for a moment, and you jump into bed with him?”
“Why do you insult me with such lies? Why?” Gale’s voice broke, but she held back the tears, her body trembling. “Before I divorce you, I would never do something like this!”
Shawn’s smirk was cold and cruel. “After the divorce, you still won’t be allowed to do such things.”
Gale bowed her head, the weight of his words suffocating her. “Yes, I’ll be controlled by you for the rest of my life.”
“Exactly!” Shawn’s tone was triumphant, his voice full of disdain. “This is what you owe me. You’re here to pay the debt for your family!”
Gale clenched her fists, the anger boiling inside her. Her emotions were a whirlwind, but the thought of clearing her father’s name became more urgent than ever. She needed to find the truth.
