Chapter 62
After drawing her blood at the hospital, Gale managed to slip away to the obstetrics and gynecology department, claiming she needed to use the bathroom. Once there, she quickly asked the doctor for a handful of abortion prevention pills and stuffed them into her bag. She had to make sure she and her child could survive — no matter what.
As she left the obstetrics and gynecology department, she encountered Susan in the elevator. With a smug look on her face, Susan sneered, “Have you finished drawing blood? You still look so energetic; it seems like you could handle more tomorrow.”
Gale’s heart tightened. She had fought for the chance to see her mother, but she couldn’t let Susan and Dean continue to drain her of blood. Not when it would endanger her child.
“Don’t even think about it,” Gale replied sharply, her voice steady despite the anxiety gnawing at her.
Susan raised an eyebrow, clearly unfazed. “Well, let’s see how it goes tomorrow.”
Gale smiled back, a touch of defiance in her eyes. “Okay, see you tomorrow.”
She stepped out of the elevator, her driver and bodyguard close behind her, making it clear that she wasn’t just any ordinary woman.
Susan watched, bewildered. “Where are you going? And why are there people following you?”
Gale lifted her chin, her voice laced with a hint of superiority. “I’m Mrs. Wood. Of course, I’m different from peasants like you.”
“You!” Susan hissed, frustration evident in her voice.
Gale ignored her, turning her back as she walked out.
What Susan didn’t know was that Shawn had arranged for those two people to shadow her, making sure that she only drew blood and saw Wendy.
As Gale left the hospital, she had no idea where her mother had been taken. The unfamiliar landscape passed by her as the car sped through the streets. It wasn’t until they reached a private, exclusive hospital on the outskirts of Sea City that the driver announced, “Ma’am, here we are.”
The hospital, a well-known establishment for the rich, left Gale in disbelief. Had Shawn really transferred his mother here and paid for her treatment? Was this really his way of showing kindness?
The facts stood before her. There was no denying it now.
A nurse guided her to the ward where her mother had been placed. “The patient has just woken up. All body functions are still recovering, so you can only see her for half an hour.”
Gale nodded, trying to steady her nerves.
As she pushed open the door, a figure emerged from the shadows. It was Susan.
The bodyguard immediately stepped forward, blocking her path. “This has nothing to do with you. Please stay away.”
Susan sneered, waving her hand dismissively. “Are you blind? Don’t you know who I am?” she demanded. “Move aside. I want to see what Gale is doing.”
The bodyguard hesitated, unsure of what to do, but he couldn’t afford to anger someone so closely tied to the family. “Are you…?”
“Susan! The future Mrs. Wood!” she said, her voice dripping with arrogance.
The bodyguards, recognizing her name, reluctantly stepped aside, allowing Susan to glide past them. She moved toward the door, pressing herself against it, trying to listen to the conversation inside.
Gale entered the room, her heart racing. She hurried to her mother’s side and took Wendy’s hand, her voice shaking with emotion. “Mom…”
Wendy blinked, her eyes fluttering as she processed the sight before her. After a few seconds of confusion, she managed to focus on Gale. “Are you Gale?” she whispered weakly.
Gale nodded, her eyes filling with tears. “It’s me, Mom. You finally woke up.”
Wendy’s eyes filled with tears as well, and she squeezed Gale’s hand. “Gale, my poor daughter… What should we do now that such a tragedy has happened? Did anyone hurt you? Please tell me you’re alright…”
The realization hit Gale with full force. After all this time, after the accident that had put her mother in a vegetative state, Wendy had finally awoken. But in that moment, Gale couldn’t help but wonder if everything — the manipulation, the blood draws, and the cruelty — would continue to haunt them.
