Chapter 22
Gale smiled softly, wiping the tears from the corners of her eyes.
Her mind was still racing, focused only on one thing—escaping and protecting the child inside her. Now that she was finally safe in Shawn’s presence, she allowed herself to pause and take in her surroundings. Her body was sore, her back drenched in sweat. Yet, seeing Shawn there, her heart settled.
She was safe.
“Why is it that trouble always finds you when you’re out of my sight?” Shawn’s voice was low as he looked at her, his tone laced with frustration. “Can’t you just stay by my side?”
Earlier, after his meeting, Shawn had been at the office when Fiona asked him what he wanted for lunch. Instead of thinking about food, his thoughts drifted to Gale. It was then that Fiona had informed him of Susan’s actions—how she had brought someone into the company and taken Gale away. Without hesitation, Shawn rushed over.
“I didn’t do anything wrong. I was just working at the office,” Gale replied, her voice tinged with exhaustion.
Shawn’s eyes narrowed as they turned to Susan, whose demeanor immediately shifted.
“Oh, I’m just a victim here!” Susan exclaimed, feigning innocence. “Gale insulted me, calling me a junior, a lowly thing, a mere watchman. I was only trying to teach her a lesson.”
Gale’s blood boiled. It was the first time she’d encountered such a blatantly fake, lying woman. “I didn’t say that, Shawn!” she exclaimed, trying to explain.
“Shut up,” Shawn interjected coldly.
Gale bit her lip, the familiar sting of rejection cutting through her. She had learned long ago that those who were unloved were often invisible, unimportant.
Susan immediately found her confidence. “Mr. Wood, she insulted me first. You would’ve been angry, too, if you had heard the things she said to me!”
“Shut up, too,” Shawn barked, his patience running thin.
“But—”
“No more.” Shawn’s voice turned icy. “You’re the first person in history to break into someone’s company and kidnap them. If I hadn’t arrived in time, the police would have been the ones standing here.”
Susan, unfazed, smirked. “I know you won’t let me get into trouble, Mr. Wood.”
Gale lowered her gaze to the floor, her heart sinking. She could feel the weight of the situation pressing down on her. It hurt more than it should, but perhaps it shouldn’t have been surprising. Shawn had never shown her anything but contempt, and now, she was just a casualty of his indifference.
“Take them away and get them out of Sea City,” Shawn ordered, his voice cold and final.
“Yes, Mr. Wood,” his assistant replied.
Susan’s face twisted with frustration. “No! I brought them here. I should be the one to deal with them, not you! It would be beneath my pride.”
Pride—Gale thought bitterly. This woman was either vain or downright evil.
Shawn’s expression hardened. “You can leave, too.”
He was close to telling her to get lost, and Gale couldn’t help but feel a rush of satisfaction at his words.
But Susan wasn’t finished. She hurried to Shawn’s side, grabbing the corner of his shirt. “Mr. Wood, are you mad at me? What about Gale? Why are you siding with her without even hearing my side?”
Shawn’s frown deepened, his anger flaring. “Go home and think about what you’ve done.”
He shook her off, and Susan, for the first time, appeared vulnerable. She burst into tears. “No! I don’t want this! You’re accusing me of something I didn’t do. You’re being biased! You didn’t even question what Gale did. Do you think I would’ve gone to the company to kidnap her without a reason?”
Gale’s heart pounded in her chest.
The warning bells rang loudly in her mind.
Had Susan discovered her pregnancy? No, it seemed impossible. How could Susan have known? But when Susan kicked her stomach earlier, it hadn’t seemed like a coincidence. Had she somehow figured it out?
Panic gripped her. If her pregnancy were exposed, she and the child would be doomed. Shawn would never forgive her. He would be furious, and she had no idea what might happen next.
Shawn sighed, his expression unreadable. “Alright, tell me. What exactly did Gale do?”
Susan hesitated, her voice faltering.
