Chapter 45
Summer snorted, her tone full of anger. “Heh, men. They’re all pigs!”
Joe immediately waved his hand, defending himself. “Not all men are scumbags like Shawn.”
Summer raised an eyebrow. “Indeed, there are still good men. But you, Joe, are definitely not one.”
She smirked, teasing him further. “You and Mr. Wood are so close that you practically share clothes, which means you’re the same as him. A scumbag!”
Joe rolled his eyes, trying to defend himself. “I’m wronged! I’m not a scumbag! Death by association!”
In the president’s office, Shawn was sitting at his desk when he saw his grandfather, Lucas Wood, walk through the door. “Grandpa,” he greeted.
Lucas, leaning on crutches with Paula helping him, entered the room. “I happened to be passing by and decided to stop by. I watched the press conference this morning. Shawn, you’re very business-minded. I believe this new venture will be a strong portfolio for the Wood Group.”
Shawn smiled confidently. “Of course. I’ll manage it well and lead the Wood family to greater heights.”
Lucas nodded approvingly but then added, “Yes, but it must be really tiring with so many burdens falling on you.”
Shawn’s smile deepened, but he could sense what was coming. “Grandpa, there’s something else you want to say.”
Lucas looked at him with a serious expression. “I’ll get straight to the point. Your brother is about to graduate and return to Sea City. You can hand over Lovito to him then.”
Shawn’s eyes hardened as he processed the suggestion. Impossible. The idea of handing over the reins of Lovito to his half-brother was unthinkable. He didn’t consider him a brother at all.
Lucas saw the resistance in Shawn’s eyes and continued, “Don’t be too hasty. Your brother deserves a chance to show his abilities.”
“He can’t even manage his love life,” Shawn snapped, unwilling to entertain the idea.
Paula, standing beside Lucas, grew anxious when she heard his refusal. “Shawn, you have to give your brother a chance to prove himself!”
“You didn’t even let him try. How can you say he couldn’t?” Paula argued, trying to reason with him.
Shawn’s gaze darkened. “Don’t you know what kind of person he is, Paula? He’s just a waste of space.”
Paula was left speechless, and she turned to Lucas for support. But Lucas, old and yearning for family harmony, sighed. “Let’s talk this out. Shawn, don’t refuse so quickly. He is family, after all.”
Shawn, however, was firm in his resolve. “No discussion,” he said coldly. “There is no room for negotiation. Whether he wants to take credit for the brand or get involved in the company, the answer is still no.”
Paula, frustrated, shot back, “Does everything in the Wood Group have to be in your hands?”
Shawn glared at her, his voice hard. “Yes. Unless you have the ability… then take it away.” It was a warning, a clear declaration of war. He knew Paula’s secret maneuvers—her attempts to marry him off to Jenny, who was aligned with her interests, and how she had been poisoning the soup that was delivered to him daily. He was aware of every little trick.
Lucas, sensing the tension, decided to bring up another topic. “Alright, Shawn, I have one more thing to say. I didn’t want you to marry Gale, but you’ve gone and done it. So now you owe me.”
Shawn frowned, confused. “What?”
“Give me a grandchild! You’re twenty-seven now. It’s time to have a child!” Lucas declared.
Shawn’s frown deepened, his mind racing. Gale? No way! The thought of having a child with her was something he could not even begin to consider.
