Chapter 94
Summer pulled Gale into the office, making a face at the chaos they’d just left behind. Joe, who had been useful for the moment, was now completely ignored, left standing speechless in the hallway.
“Women are trouble,” Joe muttered to himself, shaking his head as he walked away.
Inside the office, Gale sighed in relief. “Thank you, Summer. After all these years, you’re still the one who always stands up for me when something happens.”
Summer gave her a playful nudge. “Nonsense. Aren’t we friends? The only thing I ask of you is to be honest with me. Friendship is built on trust and honesty.”
“Okay.” Gale smiled faintly, feeling her heart warm at Summer’s words.
Summer studied her for a moment, a serious expression taking over her playful one. “Although Susan doesn’t like you, this doesn’t seem like her usual level of trouble. What else is going on between you two? Any other grudges?”
Gale hesitated for a moment before speaking, taking a deep breath. “That night… I don’t know who that man is, but I’m pregnant with his child. Susan and the dean both know, but they won’t tell me who he is. She even asked me to abort the child.”
Summer’s eyes widened in shock, and she gaped at her friend. “Wait… you’re pregnant? And you don’t know who the father is?”
“Yes,” Gale confirmed softly, her gaze lowering. “But I believe he’ll come to me. He said he wanted to marry me. Despite the circumstances that night, he was a gentleman.”
Summer’s mouth hung open in disbelief. “But… you don’t even know who he is! How can you be sure?”
Gale’s voice softened, filled with a strange sense of certainty. “That night, although I think I saved his life, he also saved me. After I ran into that room, the fat old man never came back, not even to barge in. It’s clear he has some kind of status.”
She looked up, meeting Summer’s eyes with quiet determination. “I think he just hasn’t found me yet. He promised he would come back for me.”
Summer was at a loss for words for a moment. Then, shaking her head, she said, “Gale, don’t be naive. A man you don’t know can’t be worth all of this.”
“I want this child,” Gale said, her voice filled with quiet resolve. “Not for anyone else, but for myself. The baby chose me to be its mother. I need to protect it.”
Summer stood there, silent for a while, clearly processing everything Gale had said. Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, she nodded. “Okay. If that’s what you want, I’ll respect your decision. I’ll support you no matter what.”
Gale felt a weight lift off her shoulders as she looked at her best friend’s warm smile. In that moment, she knew she wasn’t alone. With Summer by her side, she felt like she could get through anything.
“If fate decides it,” Gale said quietly, “Maybe I’ll meet the father one day. But maybe he’ll never know.”
Summer laughed softly, wrapping her arm around Gale. “Doesn’t matter. The baby has you and me. And I’m going to be the godmother!”
“Yes! Yes, Summer, you have to be the godmother!” Gale beamed, the weight of her worries slightly lighter now.
Summer chuckled. “Alright, alright. For my godchild’s sake, I’ll see what I can find out about that night. If that man can be found, I’ll make sure you know.”
Gale smiled, nodding in agreement. She had one last hope—that somehow, the truth would come to light. She turned to leave the office.
“Slow down, slow down,” Summer called out, holding her back. “You’re pregnant. Hey, I told you yesterday to go beat someone up, but what if something happened to the baby? You can’t be so reckless!”
Gale smiled warmly at her, touched by the concern. “I’m not that fragile,” she teased, trying to lighten the mood.
But inside, she appreciated the care. It felt nice to be looked after, especially at a time like this.
When she returned to her workstation, Gale found a large delivery box waiting on her desk. Curious, she opened it, her eyes widening at the sight of expensive nutritional pregnancy care products. The box was filled with items meant to support her during this delicate time—vitamins, supplements, and all sorts of baby essentials.
And then, a note.
“Gale, take good care of my great-grandchild. Buy the best food and clothing for the baby. All this must be eaten within the month, and I’ll send more to you later!”
Gale blinked in surprise, holding the note in her hands. It was signed, Grandma Wood.
She sighed, a mix of emotions flooding her. At least, in some strange way, she wasn’t entirely alone.
