Chapter 98
“Gale, if you defend Sam like this, it will only make him die faster!” Shawn’s voice was sharp, full of frustration.
Gale took a deep breath, trying to stay calm. “I said it all. I’m the one who sought him out. My mother… she needs his help.”
Shawn grabbed her by the shoulders, lifting her up, pulling her directly in front of him. His eyes were cold, seething with anger. “Would you rather go behind my back and beg him, rather than come beg me?”
Gale looked at him, her heart heavy with the weight of their strained relationship. “Shawn… What more do you want from me?” She didn’t know how much more humility she could muster.
She had knelt, begged, obeyed, endured humiliation, and bore pain. Everything she could do, Gale had done, but it was never enough.
Shawn, on the other hand, had given Susan everything. Hundreds of thousands for a bag, while she couldn’t even get him to help her buy medicine for her mother. The bitterness in her chest deepened. She still owed him money, and he refused to help with the things that really mattered.
Shawn narrowed his eyes. “You haven’t tried it. How do you know I won’t agree? As long as you’re pathetic enough, maybe I’ll agree to help.”
“If you had agreed, I wouldn’t have had to come see Sam today,” Gale shot back, her words laced with frustration.
Shawn’s eyes flashed with anger. “Gale, you really are something! If you can’t get something from me, you just go to Sam for it. He knows you’re married and is willing to pay for you… Your sly means are truly brilliant!”
“You forced me!” Gale’s voice cracked with the weight of her emotions.
“Then I will never let you see Sam again!” Shawn’s words were harsh, each one a sharp cut.
“Let him go!” Gale cried. “If you let him go, I promise I’ll never see him in private again!”
Shawn sneered deeply, his expression hardening. “It’s too late!”
He tightened his grip on her wrist, dragging her away. She fought him for a moment, but he was relentless. He raised his foot, stepping down on Sam’s chest with enough force to knock the breath out of him.
“Listen,” Shawn’s voice boomed, commanding and filled with authority. “You can never win against me, ever. Lovita is already established, and your Fantastic Jewels will cease to exist.”
Gale’s eyes widened in horror. “Shawn, you… You want to acquire Fantastic Jewels?”
Shawn didn’t answer immediately, but the implications were clear. After Sam returned to the country, he had taken charge of Fantastic Jewels. If Shawn acquired it, Sam would be ousted. The board would remove him, and the company would crumble under Shawn’s control. It was a devastating blow to Sam’s future.
Shawn’s voice was low and merciless. “Look at a man who has nothing. How can he save you?” His eyes dropped, and Gale instinctively clutched her stomach.
Without waiting for her to respond, Shawn dragged her toward the car, ignoring the fact that Sam was struggling behind them, blood staining his lips as he tried to push himself up. Gale’s heart ached, but she couldn’t do anything to help him now.
The car was silent as Shawn drove, the tension thick in the air. It wasn’t until they parked in the center of the garden at Temperley Hall that either of them spoke. Gale stayed quiet for a long time, her mind racing. Finally, she broke the silence.
“Don’t buy Fantastic Jewels. It’s not Sam’s fault. You shouldn’t punish him,” she said, her voice quiet but firm.
Shawn’s eyes flicked to her briefly before returning to the road. “Acquisition is actually just a matter of time, but Gale, you’ve made it happen sooner than expected.”
Gale’s frustration grew. “Sam and I really have nothing. The child… it’s not his. You just don’t believe me, do you?”
Shawn’s eyes darkened, and he turned his gaze to her, his expression unreadable. “Why should I believe you?”
Gale swallowed hard. “You can do a fetal paternity test. It definitely won’t be his!”
Shawn’s face remained impassive as he replied, almost casually, “Why do I need to take the trouble?”
Gale’s eyes narrowed, her voice dropping to a whisper. “Shawn, let’s negotiate.”
He let out a humorless laugh. “Negotiate? With you?” He gave her a scathing look, his eyes full of contempt. “Gale, you don’t have any bargaining chips.”
Her heart pounded as she held his gaze, her words steady despite the fear. “Yes, I do.”
