Chapter 58
When Gale opened her eyes, she heard Susan’s voice, cold and mocking. “Finally awake? Your physical fitness is pretty good. Looks like you can still donate more blood.”
“You still want more?” Gale’s voice was weak, but her defiance was clear.
“Oh, you have to be responsible for causing my dad’s brain hemorrhage. It’s your job to donate blood, and Mr. Wood agrees,” Susan replied with a sneer.
Gale struggled to sit up in the bed, her body still drained from the blood loss. “You and the dean put on this good show together!”
Susan smirked. “That’s right. Who made you so stupid? And who told you to conceive a child?”
Gale’s eyes flashed with anger. “Impossible,” she said through gritted teeth. “It’s my flesh and blood. I want it.”
Susan’s smile only grew. “Then we will continue to draw your blood and see how long you can protect yourself and the child!”
Gale’s eyes narrowed. “Susan, you want me to kill the child so much because of the child’s father, right?”
Susan’s face twitched, her expression faltering for a moment before she quickly regained her composure. “It’s not like that.”
Gale’s suspicion only deepened. “I got it right.” She stared at Susan, her voice cold and confident. “The father of this child isn’t some ugly, fat old man.”
Susan’s face flushed with jealousy, but she quickly retorted, “Don’t be delusional.” She leaned in closer, her voice venomous. “The father of this child is nothing but an ugly, fat old man. Don’t even think you can fool me.” She paused, as if to gain control of her emotions. “That night…”
Suddenly, Gale had a flashback. The memory was hazy, but she remembered enough. Although she couldn’t see the man’s face in the dark, she could recall his voice, his body shape, and the faint fragrance that clung to him. He had been an elegant, seemingly well-off man — someone who promised to marry her.
Such a man would never be an ugly, fat old man.
Susan’s face twisted in fury. “You still dare to mention that night? You’re shameless! You lost your virginity to a man like that!” She spat, her jealousy boiling over.
Gale sneered, unfazed. “The ones who are truly shameless are your father and daughter. I was in the mental hospital, yet he sent me to that hotel!”
“That doesn’t give you the right to sleep with a man like that!” Susan yelled.
Gale’s eyes narrowed dangerously. “Susan, if I told Shawn about this…”
“How dare you!” Susan screamed, her voice filled with rage. “I’ll smash your baby out of your stomach myself, and let President Wood kill the child himself!”
Gale’s heart tightened, but she said nothing. She coldly retracted her gaze and slowly pushed herself off the bed, ignoring the weakness in her limbs.
“Where are you going?” Susan demanded, stopping her.
Gale didn’t even glance at her. “Before your dad wakes up and recovers, I have to stay in the hospital, ready to donate blood at any time?”
Susan raised a hand to stop her, but Gale waved it away. She walked out of the room, her steps firm despite her exhaustion.
Outside the hospital, she stumbled across a food stall and sat down to grab something to eat. Her hunger gnawed at her, and the warm food made her eyes swell up with tears, though she refused to let them fall.
Her tears felt worthless.
Fiona appeared shortly after. “Miss, Mr. Wood asked me to take you back to Temperley Hall.”
Gale nodded, her voice flat. “Wait until I finish eating.”
The food didn’t do much to ease her, but she forced herself to swallow a few bites.
When they arrived back at Temperley Hall, Gale found herself hungry again. However, it was late at night, and there was nothing left to eat.
She wandered through the kitchen, searching for something, and finally found a thermos flask on the table — the soup that Paula sent her every day.
Perfect. She had just had blood drawn and needed nourishment.
She couldn’t wait to eat it. Just as she was about to lift the spoon to her mouth, Shawn’s voice interrupted from the doorway. “Wait.”
She turned to face him, eyes full of confusion. “What’s wrong? I’m not allowed to eat anything?”
Shawn walked over with a deep, emotionless expression. Without a word, he took the soup from her hands. “You can eat anything, but not this.”
“What?” Gale’s voice was filled with disbelief. “You used to force me to drink it! Now… now I need it to replenish myself, but you won’t let me?”
Her frustration and anger that had been building all day finally erupted. “Shawn, do I even have the right to be human anymore? What do you want from me? I’m just trying to get something to eat in the middle of the night, but you have to intervene? How long are you going to keep torturing me?”
