Chapter 46
“Grandpa, she is Dr. Warm’s daughter and an enemy of our Wood family!” Shawn’s voice was firm as he tried to explain.
Lucas didn’t seem fazed. “Since you are aware of that, why did you still marry her? Now that you have, she should fulfill her responsibility as the Wood family’s daughter-in-law.”
Shawn’s expression darkened. “I will have children, but it won’t be from Gale.”
Lucas sighed heavily, growing impatient. “Then how long do you want me to wait? I’m old; I just want to hold my great-grandchild as soon as possible! Otherwise, I won’t be able to see you have a child before I die!”
Shawn, his tone cold, responded, “I can hold it to your grave so you can take a look.”
“You! You are pissing me off!” Lucas’s frustration boiled over as he tapped his crutches heavily on the floor. He turned his head away in anger, clearly upset.
“Fiona, send Grandpa out,” Shawn said, not in the mood to entertain further discussion.
“Yes, Mr. Wood,” Fiona responded.
Paula, however, stood still, rubbing her hands together, seemingly ready for a different kind of conversation.
Shawn raised an eyebrow, noticing her reluctance to leave. “Why are you still here?” he asked. “Give up trying to find a position for your scumbag son in the family. I will never let him in.”
Paula understood the message loud and clear. “Well, the old man said it. Take your time to think about it.”
She knew that Shawn had solidified his control over the Wood family, and there was no point in rushing. She would bide her time, just as she always had. After all, she had married into the family and bore a son for the Wood name. Who had the last laugh would truly be the one who won in the end.
Paula smiled and casually mentioned, “Shawn, I saw news reports that you spent a lot of money buying a jade bracelet at a charity auction.”
Shawn, slightly irritated, responded with a simple, “Yes.”
Paula, sensing an opportunity, pressed on. “Why did you buy it?”
Shawn, already bored with the conversation, muttered, “I do whatever I want.”
Paula, pretending to be coy, continued, “It’s a woman’s jewelry. You can’t wear it. Why don’t you give it to me?”
Shawn’s gaze turned sharp. “You want it?”
He had no personal use for the jade bracelet. It made sense for Gale to want it, given that it was her mother’s, but why did Susan and Paula keep fixating on it?
Paula nodded eagerly. “Yes, yes. I think that jade is magnificent. It feels like it’s been blessed by God himself. It could bring me blessings and maybe even prevent disasters!”
“If you like it, go to the mall and buy one,” Shawn replied dismissively.
“I can’t buy that one. I just like that one,” Paula insisted, her tone growing more desperate.
Shawn shot her a look, his refusal final. “No way.”
The jade bracelet wasn’t of much value to him; it was just a symbol he intended to keep for himself. He relished the thought of Gale coming to him, begging for it—pitiful, forlorn, and desperate. It was a shame she had only begged him once after their marriage.
With a huff, Paula turned on her heel and walked out of the office, muttering to herself as she went. “What’s so special about it, anyway? He won’t be able to have children in the future. Ha! When my son comes back, he will definitely replace you. At that time, it will be you begging us!”
As Paula approached Gale, who had been watching from a distance, Gale quickly turned to leave, trying to avoid confrontation.
Paula, seeing her attempt to flee, caught up with her. “Hey, Gale, what are you hiding when you see your mother-in-law? How dare you disrespect me?”
Worried about causing a scene in front of their colleagues, Gale forced a smile and greeted, “Aunt Paula.”
Paula, eyes narrowing, snapped, “What’s with your attitude?”
Gale, eager to end the conversation, replied, “I have to get back to work if you have nothing else to say.”
Paula stopped her in her tracks. “Wait.” She gave Gale a piercing look. “Did Shawn give you a jade bracelet?”
Gale blinked, confused. “Jade bracelet?”
“The one Shawn bought at the charity auction. Do you have it?” Paula asked, her tone demanding.
Before Gale could answer, Paula grabbed her wrist and pulled up her sleeve, revealing that Gale’s wrist was bare.
