Chapter 37

With Joe stepping forward, Susan didn’t want to appear too domineering. She immediately addressed the situation politely, “Mr. Winter, it was Gale who got my skirt dirty first.”
“Where is it? Let me take a look,” Joe replied.
“That’s it… eh?” Susan glanced down, only to find her skirt was clean, with no trace of the cake left.
It seemed the stain had been wiped away during their argument.
Joe stared in disbelief. “I don’t see any stain. Am I missing something?”
Summer quickly chimed in, “Mr. Winter, your eyes are sharp. The only darkness here is someone’s heart!”
Susan’s face turned pale with embarrassment. How could Gale be so fortunate to have so many people defending her?
Gripping her teeth in frustration, Susan prepared to storm off, but Joe stopped her.
“Don’t leave yet. Look, Shawn is here too. Let him weigh in.”
Everyone had been so focused on the scene that they hadn’t noticed Shawn had silently approached them. With his hands casually tucked into his trousers, he stood tall, his gaze sweeping over the group with indifference.
“Shawn!” Susan rushed toward him as soon as she saw him. “You need to help me.”
Shawn gave her a cool glance and responded lightly, “The auction is about to start.”
“My skirt…” Susan began to protest.
“Tomorrow, I’ll have the store manager send over the latest collection of dresses for you,” Shawn said, cutting her off.
Susan’s eyes brightened, and she smiled. “Thank you, Mr. Wood!” She shot a provoking look at Gale before grabbing Shawn’s hand and walking away with her head held high.
“How dare she…” Summer was ready to charge after them.
Gale shook her head, stopping her. “Forget it.”
Summer clenched her fists, seething. “Gale, you’re pathetic!!! You’re Mrs. Wood! How could you let a mistress walk all over you like that?”
“If it were me, I would’ve gone after Susan and made sure she couldn’t show her face again!” Summer added, her voice full of fury. She wanted to teach Susan a lesson.
Gale sighed, “Thank you for your help earlier, but don’t be too impulsive next time. Susan holds grudges and will get back at you.”
Summer huffed, stomping her feet in frustration. “Too bad I’m a busybody!” She started to walk away, with Joe quickly following her.
“Hey, hey, why are you leaving when I’m not?” Joe called out.
Summer folded her arms, rolling her eyes. “You’re ridiculous. Mr. Winter, I need your help with something.”
“You’ll have to pay more,” Joe teased.
“I’ll buy you dinner for a month,” Summer replied.
Joe raised an eyebrow, smirking. “Deal!”
“I want to know what Gale’s secret is,” Summer said, her curiosity piqued.
“Got it,” Joe replied with a nod.
Summer was still skeptical. “Can you do it? If you can’t find out, you’ll have to treat me to meals every day for a year!”
Joe, full of confidence, replied, “Actually, I’m curious about what happened between Shawn and Gale too. It’s quite the coincidence that you’re asking about it. Now I’ve got a perfect excuse to satisfy my curiosity.”
Summer grinned, giving him a high five. “Deal!”
At that moment, the venue lights slowly dimmed, and all the spotlights turned to focus on the stage. The charity auction was about to begin.
The host’s voice echoed through the room. “Thank you for attending tonight’s charity auction. All proceeds from tonight will be donated to help the poor. Let’s reveal the first item for auction.”
As the red cloth was lifted, a jade bracelet appeared, sparkling under the spotlight. Gale’s eyes widened, and she murmured, “That’s my mother’s bracelet…”
