Chapter 30
“You need to atone for your family’s sins!” Shawn’s words were like a lash, his forehead veins bulging as he roared in fury.
Susan, still in his arms, gave Gale a smug, provoking smile.
Gale didn’t flinch. “Fine,” she said, her voice steady despite the turmoil inside. “If you think I pushed her, then that’s what I did.” She had no further words to argue with him.
Shawn, with Susan still cradled in his arms, stormed off. “You better hope she’s okay! Otherwise, for every broken bone she suffers, I’ll break two from you!” His words hung heavy in the air.
Gale stood frozen, watching as Shawn gently placed Susan into the car before driving off to the hospital. In that moment, Shawn felt like a devil—a cruel, unforgiving devil. Though, perhaps even devils had a gentle side… but it would never be for her.
She lowered her gaze to the back of her hand, where the skin had been scratched raw, faint traces of blood seeping through the wound. The real aggressor was Susan, using the pretext of an apology to manipulate her into getting rid of the child.
The rest of the night, Gale couldn’t find rest. She sat at the door, waiting for Shawn’s return. When she finally heard footsteps, her heart quickened.
Shawn walked past her, his expression cold and indifferent. “You’re lucky. It was just a few scratches.”
Gale said nothing.
He stopped before entering the room, glancing back at her. “Gale, marrying me and staying in Temperley Hall is no different from being locked in a mental hospital. Do you understand?” His voice was cruel. “You’re just paying for your family’s sins—only in a different place, in a different way.”
Gale lifted her gaze, looking him in the eye. “Then can I go back to the mental hospital?”
She couldn’t bear to stay with him, like a bird trapped in a cage, suffocating with each passing moment. It would be better to return to the dark, lonely hospital.
Shawn’s laugh was bitter. “After the divorce, if that’s really what you want, I can arrange it.”
Gale’s heart sank, despair sweeping through her.
“Two years in captivity, being your wife… hasn’t that been enough to atone for my sins? Why won’t you just let me go?”
“Oh, you thought so naively that a divorce would bring you freedom?” Shawn’s voice dripped with contempt.
Gale’s eyes fluttered shut, the weight of the truth crashing down on her. “At least let me live like a normal person should.”
“Keep dreaming!” Shawn’s words shattered her remaining hopes. He sneered, “I haven’t even figured out how I’ll torture you after the divorce. But remember this, you will never escape my grasp.”
The door slammed shut with a deafening thud.
Gale sat on the bed, her body curled into itself. She clutched the blanket to her chest, drawing her knees to her as she leaned against the wall.
At this moment, the only one accompanying her was the tiny life growing inside her.
“My child, Mommy won’t give up on you,” she whispered, the promise a soft vow that echoed in her heart.

The next morning, Gale arrived at work, arriving on time as usual.
Joe greeted her with a grin. “Yo, you’re early today. That sachet of yours must be doing wonders!”
She smiled politely, though the reason for her early arrival was far from the sachet. She no longer had to walk to work—she was driven by Shawn. The ride was suffocating, and she had to get out early to avoid being seen by her colleagues. Shawn ignored her, his indifference a constant reminder of the gulf between them.
Joe, oblivious to her discomfort, continued. “By the way, Gale. Someone will be appointed as the new director of the jewelry department later.”
“Is it a man or a woman?” Gale asked, trying to steer the conversation away from her personal turmoil.
