Chapter 89
Blood dripped from Gale’s hand, staining the jade pieces she had gathered. She stared at the bloodied fragments, unable to comprehend the depth of her pain. Her chest tightened, and she let out a scream of despair, a raw sound of helplessness and humiliation that echoed in the room.
Outside, Shawn paused, hearing her cry. Fiona, who was standing by, hesitated before asking, “Mr. Wood, this… would you like to go in and have a look?”
“Follow her,” Shawn replied with a cool detachment.
“Yes,” Fiona responded, her voice steady despite the unease building in her chest.
Half an hour later, Gale emerged from the office, her face as pale as the marble floor beneath her feet. She moved slowly, her gaze distant, almost as if she were walking through a dream. The broken jade bracelet was carefully tucked into her pocket, though the blood on her hands still flowed, staining her sleeves and trousers.
“Madam, you’re injured!” Fiona exclaimed, startled. “The wound is so deep; it must be bandaged immediately!”
But Gale didn’t react. Her face was blank, her eyes void of emotion. Did it hurt? Yes, but compared to the pain in her heart, it didn’t even matter.
Fiona, frantic, quickly led her to the secretary’s office and rummaged through the medicine box to stop the bleeding. Gale didn’t speak, didn’t move. She allowed Fiona to do whatever she wanted to her, as if she were a doll without a soul.
As soon as Summer received the news, she rushed to the office. “What happened? Did Shawn hurt you?” she demanded, her voice filled with worry and anger.
Fiona, visibly anxious, stepped back, trying to calm Summer. “Summer, don’t talk nonsense.”
“But Gale went into his room! Where is he? Where’s Mr. Wood?” Summer was ready to explode. “If it was him who hurt you, I swear—”
Fiona tried to reason, “Even if Mr. Wood is here, there’s nothing we can do to him.”
Summer’s frustration boiled over. “What a dog!”
But Gale, her voice barely a whisper, interrupted. “It wasn’t him. It was me. He hurt me in ways you can’t see.”
Her words hung in the air, heavy with resignation. She felt completely broken, hopeless in a way that even Summer couldn’t fix.
“Gale, tell me what happened. Maybe talking about it will make you feel better,” Summer insisted, her concern for her best friend evident. She tried to smile, to comfort her, but Gale couldn’t even manage a fake smile.
“I’m fine,” Gale muttered, shaking her head.
Summer didn’t buy it. “We’re best friends, you know. I want to help.”
Gale sighed deeply, her voice laced with sorrow. “I don’t want to drag you into this.”
“Is Susan doing something again? And is Shawn making things worse?” Summer asked, already suspecting the truth.
Gale’s eyes darkened at the mention of Susan’s name. There it was. The instigator.
“She followed me,” Gale began quietly. “She recorded my conversation with my mother and showed it to Shawn. That’s what made him so furious. He threw the jade bracelet. That’s how it broke.”
Summer’s anger flared. “I knew it! From the moment I saw her, I knew that woman was nothing but a snake!” Her teeth clenched in fury. “Let’s go. We’re going to find her.”
Gale followed numbly, barely registering the world around her.
“No. Wait.” Fiona felt a pang of unease. “I should tell Mr. Winter.”
Summer’s protective streak was well known, and with Mr. Winter’s backing, she had power that even Shawn wouldn’t dare to challenge. But Gale… Gale was married to Shawn, and Shawn was still a force to be reckoned with.
In the car, Gale finally snapped out of her trance. “Wait, where are you taking me?”
“Revenge,” Summer answered, her grip tightening on the steering wheel as she made a sharp turn. Her driving skills were impeccable, but it was her bad temper that kept her going today.
Gale’s heart sank. “Revenge?”
“Yeah,” Summer said, her voice full of determination. “We’re going after Susan. She’s the one behind all this. It’s time someone put her in her place.”
Gale’s eyes flickered with a mix of disbelief and resignation. “What’s the use? What can we do to her? Tear her apart with words? Curse her? It won’t fix anything. I don’t have any evidence. She’s just a snake who knows how to cover her tracks.”
Summer’s expression hardened. “You want evidence? Forget about logic when dealing with someone like her. You’ve seen how she operates. It’s time to hit her where it hurts.”
Gale could only nod, her thoughts clouded by everything that had happened. She knew that no matter what they did, Susan was always a step ahead. But Summer… Summer wasn’t going to let anyone get away with it. Not this time.
