Chapter 36
It was only later that Gale fully understood Susan’s intentions.
If Gale had taken off her dress and handed it to Susan, she would have either had to hide in the bathroom or leave the event. Honestly, Gale had been sitting quietly in the corner, minding her own business. Why couldn’t Susan just let her be?
“Sorry, Miss Susan.” Gale smiled, her tone sweet but firm. “You’re too short. My dress size… it won’t fit you.”
Gale was nearly 1.7 meters tall, with long legs and a slender waist, while Susan stood at just 1.6 meters. It was obvious that the dress would be too long for her.
She shrugged lightly. “If you put on my dress, it’ll drag on the floor. I’d love to give it to you, but it’s a pity…”
“Gale, you…” Susan’s face reddened with frustration.
“I’ll wipe it down for you,” Gale said quickly, trying to end the confrontation. “If it doesn’t come clean, I’ll wash it for you and blow dry it. No problem.”
But Susan was beyond reasoning. She had no intention of letting it go. With a swift movement, she reached out and tugged at Gale’s dress.
“I don’t care. You have to take it off!” she snapped.
At first glance, it was clear the pink dress had been purchased by Mr. Wood himself. Gale, a woman who had once been in a mental hospital, was unworthy of wearing such expensive luxury. Susan’s eyes gleamed with contempt as she thought of it all.
“What are you doing, Susan?” Gale’s voice shook with indignation.
“If you can’t take it off yourself, I’ll help you!” Susan said cruelly.
They were in a public space, and if Gale were to be seen in such a vulnerable position, it would be a humiliating spectacle. Her dignity would be shattered. Susan’s intentions were clear—she wanted to destroy Gale’s self-respect.
But just as things were about to escalate, a voice rang out.
“Hey! What’s going on here?”
It was Summer. She rushed over, her eyes sharp with fury.
With a swift motion, Summer shoved Susan back, causing her to stumble and nearly twist her ankle.
“Who are you? Do you know who I am?” Susan shouted, seething with anger.
Summer stood tall and unapologetic. “Hear this loud and clear—my name is Summer!”
“I warn you, mind your own business!” Susan’s voice trembled with rage.
Summer only snorted. “I’ll mind whatever business I want. Now tell me, what’s going on here?”
She stepped in front of Gale protectively, just like when they were students—whenever Gale was bullied, Summer was always the first to stand up for her.
“Gale, are you okay? Get dressed,” Summer said quickly.
Gale, still shaken, pulled up her dress to cover herself. “It’s alright.”
“If I’d shown up a little later, you would’ve made a fool of yourself,” Summer said, her tone full of concern and irritation. “Who is this woman?”
Gale hesitated, then answered honestly, “She’s Shawn’s female companion.”
“I’ll be damned!” Summer couldn’t hide her astonishment.
Susan, however, didn’t take kindly to the comment. “Do you know who I am? This has nothing to do with you. It’s between Gale and me!”
“Bah!” Summer rolled her eyes dramatically. “You’re just a side dish, nothing more. Stop acting like you’re the main course. In ancient times, you’d have been thrown into a pigsty.”
Susan’s face turned bright red with rage. “You!”
“What about me?” Summer snapped back. “Apologize to Gale!”
“I apologize to her? Impossible!” Susan retorted, her tone haughty. “Summer, is it? I’ll remember you. You better hope we don’t cross paths again.”
Gale hurried to intervene, not wanting Summer to get caught up in the mess. “It has nothing to do with Summer, Susan. It’s our business.”
Just then, another voice called out from behind them.
“Well, well, it’s quite lively here, isn’t it?”
Joe appeared, his expression bemused. “What’s all this fuss about?”
Summer shot him an exasperated look. “I ran into a mad dog!”
Joe turned to Susan, his gaze sharp. “Isn’t this Shawn’s companion? What’s the matter? Why so angry? Summer here is my subordinate, so if you want anything, come to me.”
“Who are you?” Susan sneered.
“I’m Joe, Vice President of the Wood Group,” he replied smoothly, his tone leaving no room for argument.
