Chapter 95
It turned out the delivery was from Lucas Wood. Gale stared at the note in her hands, her heart sinking. Lucas had always believed that the child was Shawn’s, and Shawn, for his part, had never corrected the assumption. She couldn’t even imagine how Shawn would react if he ever found out the truth.
If the truth came out, and the old man was no longer around to protect her, the child would be lost forever. Gale knew what she had to do next. She needed to divorce Shawn as quickly as possible, unearth the truth, and escape the current danger she found herself in.
Her mind raced—this was about saving both herself and the child. There was too much at stake.
Later that evening, when she returned to Temperley Hall, Gale sat under the dim light of the lamp, trying to piece together the jade bracelet again. She had tried using glue, but it hadn’t worked; the marks left by the adhesive were visible and damaged the jade. Shawn hadn’t come back that night, and honestly, Gale was glad. She guessed he was probably at Susan’s place. It didn’t matter. In fact, Gale wished he would spend every night with Susan.
The housekeeper entered, carrying a bowl of soup. “Madam, please rest for a while. You’ve been straining your eyes,” he said kindly. “Mr. Lucas ordered this to be made for you.”
“Thank you,” Gale replied, her voice soft. As the housekeeper placed the soup on the table, Gale lowered her voice and looked around to make sure no one was listening. “Housekeeper, I have a few questions… If you feel this is inappropriate or if it’s too dangerous, you can leave without answering.”
The housekeeper hesitated but didn’t leave.
“I’ve always believed my father didn’t kill Alex Wood. I’ve said this before, and I’ve always believed it strongly. So, housekeeper, I want to find the truth.” This was the first time Gale had confided in someone outside of Summer about her intentions. She had always trusted the housekeeper. He had been silent and helpful, never harming her, and she felt he might be her only ally.
The housekeeper’s face grew somber. “Madam, you need to let that idea go. Never mention it to anyone else. It will only bring you disaster.”
Gale’s heart pounded, but she pressed on. “I trust you. I only told you because I believe you won’t hurt me.”
The housekeeper’s face darkened, and he lowered his voice. “I still advise you not to pursue this. It’s dangerous. The world of the wealthy is full of dark waters, and many things can’t be proven by evidence. Sometimes, the truth is only visible to those who can see beyond the surface.”
Gale’s eyes sharpened. “So, you’re telling me that the truth hasn’t been uncovered yet? Does that mean it’s still possible to investigate?”
“Shh!” The housekeeper hissed, motioning for her to quiet down. “That’s not exactly what I meant.”
Gale leaned in closer, her eyes wide with determination. “Please, housekeeper. You have to understand that finding the truth is the only way my family and the child in my womb will have a future.”
The housekeeper’s eyes flashed with an emotion Gale couldn’t quite place. His voice softened. “You don’t understand, Madam. This is not something a woman can accomplish on her own. It’s… too difficult.”
Gale gripped the edge of the table, her heart racing. “Housekeeper, please… just give me one clue. Anything. I need something to go on. The truth is the only way out of this miserable life I’m trapped in.”
The housekeeper sighed deeply, looking conflicted. “I don’t have any evidence, and I can’t help you. The wealthy… they play a deep game, and many things are not meant to be exposed. It’s a world where seeing and guessing often matters more than facts and evidence.”
“But, I’m here… with Shawn,” Gale said, almost to herself. “I can get closer to the answers, can’t I?”
The housekeeper paused, his expression unreadable. After a long silence, he shook his head. “Madam, Temperley Hall is Mr. Wood’s private residence. He only moved in here after taking over the Wood Group. Before that, Mr. Wood lived in the Wood family home.”
Gale’s mind raced as the pieces clicked into place. She nodded slowly. “I see. So, you mean…”
The housekeeper’s gaze was filled with an unspoken warning. “I don’t know what you think you’ll find here, but don’t underestimate how powerful the people behind Mr. Wood are. Some things might be better left in the dark.”
Gale’s determination only grew. She wasn’t going to stop now. The truth, no matter how difficult, was the only way forward.
