Chapter 92
Susan’s appearance, coupled with her overdone expression and whining tone, was enough to make anyone’s stomach turn. To Shawn, it was more than just nauseating—it was infuriating.
If he hadn’t promised to marry her that night, he wouldn’t even spare her a second glance. A woman like her was beneath his notice. He’d never willingly be in her presence if it weren’t for this forced relationship.
“Who did this to you?” Shawn asked, his voice cold.
Susan, her face twisted in fury, immediately blurted, “Gale!”
“Her?” Shawn raised an eyebrow, clearly surprised.
Just then, Gale came down the stairs, her steps slow and deliberate. When she saw Susan’s sorry state, she couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow. “Oh, are you role-playing? Or maybe a cameo as a homeless person in a movie?”
Susan pointed at Gale, her voice rising with anger. “Gale, stop pretending! You know exactly why I look like this!”
Gale put on an innocent expression. “That’s strange. I haven’t even seen you today. How would I know why you look like this?”
“It’s you! You did this to me!” Susan yelled, her face turning bright red with fury.
Gale’s expression remained perfectly composed as she covered her nose. “Hmm, smells so bad, it’s actually polluting the air.”
Susan’s face twisted in frustration. “Don’t act like you don’t know! You’re the one who had me thrown in a sack, beaten, and dumped in a garbage truck! No one else would do this to me!”
Gale shrugged casually. “You’re slandering me with no proof. You said it yourself, one shouldn’t point fingers without evidence. Susan, you can’t frame me like this.”
Susan’s frustration boiled over. “Look into it! You’re so powerful, Mr. Wood! You should have no trouble finding evidence to prove it was her!”
Shawn didn’t respond. He simply pursed his lips and stayed silent, not even bothering to look at Susan.
Gale, however, spoke calmly. “I can explain. I’ve been at the company all day. I was working with Director Summer in the afternoon. There are witnesses, and the surveillance footage will back me up.”
Susan sneered. “Of course, you and Summer are in on it together. She’s your friend, and she’ll always cover for you.”
Gale remained unfazed. “Summer is not only my friend but also my boss. There’s no reason for her to back me up in such a ridiculous situation.”
Susan had no response to that. She stomped her foot in frustration, wailing, “Mr. Wood, you have to help me! I’ve been wronged!”
Shawn gave her a dismissive look. “I see. You’re dirty. Go wash up first.”
Susan nodded begrudgingly, clearly displeased but unwilling to argue further.
Gale bit back a smile, pleased with herself. It felt good, really, to finally see Susan get a taste of her own medicine. “Childish,” Gale muttered under her breath.
Shawn glanced at her, his lips curling into a smirk. “Who’s being childish?”
“You,” Gale shot back, arching an eyebrow.
Shawn raised his own eyebrows in challenge. “Is it fun to make fun of people? Just because she recorded a video and came to complain, you’ve decided to treat her this way?”
Gale’s expression hardened, though she refused to back down. He could see right through her. He knew she was behind it, but so what? She wasn’t going to admit anything. It didn’t matter. No one could prove a thing.
“It’s not me,” she said, her tone flat. “I’ve been working with Summer all day on Lovito. I had no time to take revenge on her.”
Shawn’s frown deepened, his gaze flicking toward her. “Summer’s under Joe’s protection. For his sake, I won’t bother with her.”
He was determined to let Susan handle her own mess. If she wanted to keep pushing Shawn’s buttons, she’d have to deal with the consequences herself.
Susan, however, wasn’t giving up. She continued to cry and demand Shawn’s attention, but he was clearly losing patience. With an exasperated sigh, he said, “Fine. Go to the Wood Group tomorrow and ask Summer yourself.”
Susan, still insisting that she was wronged, stormed off, clearly determined to get answers from Summer. But Shawn knew it was a lost cause.
