Chapter 60
“Well, why are you here?” Shawn responded, his voice deep and controlled.
He kept Gale in his arms, pulling the quilt over her again. “She’s still asleep, grandpa.”
Lucas nodded in understanding, his face softening. “You must have tired her out. It’s fine, let her sleep a little longer.”
Gale slowly opened her eyes and found herself incredibly close to Shawn’s chest. For a few seconds, she was stunned, unsure of what was happening.
“What…” she began, but Shawn interrupted her.
“It’s nothing,” he murmured softly. “Don’t worry about it. Go back to sleep.”
Before Gale could respond, Lucas’s voice came from behind them. “I’m just passing by to take a look. I’ll get going now.”
Gale blinked and, still groggy, turned her gaze toward the door. Only then did she realize what had happened. “Uh, grandpa, you’re here?”
Lucas chuckled, his demeanor warm. “It’s fine, it’s fine. Just pretend I wasn’t here.” He turned to leave, pausing to add, “Shawn, carry on.”
Gale lay there, still trying to process everything. Lucas had come in to check on them, just a casual visit, and she’d been too dazed to realize what was going on.
“Stupid woman,” Shawn muttered, pushing her away. “Be smarter next time. If you let Grandpa notice anything wrong, you’ll know the consequences.”
He rolled out of bed and began to put on his shirt, buttoning it slowly. His movements were deliberate, almost tempting.
But Gale couldn’t bring herself to appreciate it. She stared at his back and, with a hint of bitterness, said, “Since your grandpa wants a child so much, you can have one with Susan. Start working on it now, and you’ll definitely be able to conceive once you’re married again.”
Shawn froze mid-motion, his expression darkening. “Shut up.”
“I’m just speaking the truth,” Gale replied coolly. “Anyway, it’s the truth.”
Shawn turned to face her, his eyes cold. “I won’t touch her before we’re married. We’ll deal with that after.”
Gale chuckled lightly. “Are you… not good at it?”
Shawn’s gaze sharpened. “What did you say?”
His jaw tightened, clearly irritated. Gale, however, wasn’t intimidated. She met his eyes without fear. “Yes, you never touch me, and you don’t want to touch Susan. This monk-like life… Which man would be content living like this? I can’t think of any other reason.”
Shawn’s hand shot out, gripping her neck lightly. “Don’t provoke me, and I won’t touch you.” His lips brushed against her cheek, a gesture that sent a shiver through her.
Gale quickly recoiled, her words sharp. “Then, are you going to keep fooling Grandpa like this forever?”
Shawn narrowed his eyes. “For now, yes. Get up and go to the hospital.”
Gale’s mind raced, a sudden alarm ringing in her head. “Hospital?”
Shawn’s tone was firm. “The dean is still in critical condition. Your blood type matches his, so you’ll need to donate more.”
Gale immediately shook her head. “I’m not going.”
The pain from yesterday’s blood donation still lingered in her body, and the thought of drawing more blood terrified her. But more than that, her child…
Her voice faltered with worry. “If I continue… What about my baby?”
Shawn’s response was cold and unyielding. “You’ll go. Your life doesn’t matter. You can do this.”
Her body tensed with resistance. “I won’t go.”
Shawn’s patience wore thin. “You’ll go. Or I’ll drag you. Your choice.”
He stood over her, tall and imposing, pulling at his tie with a finality that made Gale’s heart race. She couldn’t back down. For her child’s sake, she would resist no matter what.
“I will not…” she repeated firmly.
Just as Shawn stepped toward her, the housekeeper’s voice suddenly broke through the tension. He knocked urgently on the door. “Mr. Wood! Just received a call from the hospital!”
Shawn’s eyes flashed with impatience. “Come in! What’s going on over there? Is something wrong?”
The housekeeper hurried in, his expression serious. “It’s your wife’s mother’s hospital. We’ve received news!”
Gale’s heart skipped a beat. She stared at the housekeeper, her face pale. “What’s wrong with my mother?”
Before she could get another word out, she was out of bed, gripping the housekeeper’s hand tightly, her eyes filled with dread.
