Chapter 78
Tears suddenly fell.
God had given her a glimmer of hope.
“Thank you, thank you. This money is very important to me…” Gale repeated the words over and over, her voice trembling. With Sam’s help, combined with her salary, she could finally afford her mother’s medicine for this month.
Sam’s eyes narrowed, concern written all over his face. “What do you need the money for?”
Gale wiped her eyes and took a deep breath. “My mother woke up. She needs a special medicine.”
Sam’s eyes widened in surprise. “Really? That’s wonderful! Gale, can I see her?”
Gale hesitated. Seeing her mother required Shawn’s permission, and she had already lied to her mother, saying she was with Sam. She couldn’t risk revealing too much.
“Not right now,” Gale said, avoiding his eyes. “I’ll let you know when I can.”
Sam nodded understandingly. “Okay. Gale, you have a mother again.”
Those words hit Gale like a wave, and her chest tightened. For so long, she’d lived a sad, lonely life, but now, with a little bit of hope, her mother had returned to her. The tears flowed freely.
“Yes, I have a mother.” She murmured, wiping her face. “A child with a mother is lucky.”
After receiving the money, Gale hurried to the hospital, where she immediately paid for the medicine. She pleaded with the doctor, her voice desperate. “Please give it to my mother as soon as possible… I’ll find a way to pay for next month’s medicine bill, I promise.”
The doctor nodded, reassured by her sincerity. “Okay, we’ll make sure she gets it.”
Finally, Gale could breathe again, knowing her mother would get the medicine she needed.
When she returned to Temperley Hall that night, it was already dark. The atmosphere in the house was strangely quiet, with the servants avoiding eye contact, as if they feared to speak in her presence.
“Madam, you’re back,” the housekeeper said quietly. “Mr. Wood is waiting for you upstairs.”
Gale nodded silently and made her way up the stairs, her heart thudding louder with each step. The long corridor stretched out before her, eerily silent except for the sound of her own heartbeat echoing in her ears.
When she pushed open the door to the master bedroom, she immediately saw Shawn sitting on the sofa, his eyes sharp as knives as they locked onto her.
“Back?” he asked, his voice cold and calculating.
“Yes,” she answered, swallowing hard. Her gaze was drawn to a stack of cash beside him. Panic surged within her.
Shawn’s lips curved into a cold smile. “This is your money, Gale. What are you so afraid of?”
His smile sent chills down her spine.
The money she had just paid to the hospital was now sitting in front of Shawn. She felt a knot tighten in her stomach.
“I asked you to have an abortion,” Shawn said, his smile deepening. “But instead, you’ve done what? Tell me, where did you get so much money?”
The more he smiled, the more furious he became. But Gale felt a strange relief. At least now, he wasn’t pretending. He was angry—and she could handle that.
“I… borrowed it from someone.” She hesitated for a moment, then added, “Joe.”
She winced internally. She knew she was throwing her boss under the bus, but there was no other way. Joe was Shawn’s friend—nothing would happen to him. Or at least, she hoped so.
Shawn’s gaze darkened, and he leaned forward slightly, his eyes narrowing as he glared at her. “Are you sure?”
The tension in the room thickened. Gale felt her heart race.
Then, without warning, Shawn grabbed the thick wad of cash and threw it at her face.
“I checked your bank account, Gale,” he hissed. “It wasn’t Joe who gave you the money. It was Sam.”
Gale’s breath caught in her throat as reality hit her like a wave. Sam’s name hung in the air, heavier than ever.
Shawn had already checked. He knew everything.
