Chapter 75
Shawn gripped Gale’s wrist tightly and yanked her up with brutal force.
“No!” she screamed, her body straining against his grip. “I’m not going to the hospital!”
Shawn’s voice was cold, his eyes icy with rage. “Nobody will help you!”
Just as the tension escalated, Shawn’s phone rang. It was Lucas.
“Shawn!” Lucas’s voice crackled through the phone, filled with concern. “What are you doing? She’s pregnant! Don’t drag her around like that. Think about the child!”
Shawn sneered, his grip tightening as he glared at the phone. “Grandpa, your spy is really dedicated. It’s like a live broadcast!”
Lucas, undeterred, continued in a softer tone, “Everything is for the sake of the child. Let go of your violent temper. Take Gale back to her room to rest. Stop causing her more trouble.”
Shawn was about to snap back, but Lucas persisted, his voice pleading. “Just let me be a grandfather. I beg you. I lost my son in my old age. I’m so pitiful… I just want to hold my great-grandson.”
Shawn’s expression darkened, and with a growl, he hung up the phone, his face emotionless.
Shawn’s marriage to Gale had been a result of Paula’s insistence, and even now, he couldn’t bear to reveal to his grandfather that the child Gale carried wasn’t his. That secret remained locked away, only known to him and Gale.
“You’re lucky,” Shawn muttered through gritted teeth. “Keep the child… for now.”
Gale’s body sagged in relief, and she collapsed to the floor, her legs giving out from under her. It wasn’t much, but at least for now, her baby was safe.
She exhaled slowly. What would the future hold? She had no answers. But at least for the time being, she had time to think of ways to protect the child.
And what about the father? Didn’t he say he would marry her? Why hadn’t he shown up? She felt utterly alone, barely able to hold herself together.
At the Wood Group office, it was payday, and the atmosphere was lively. Everyone was in high spirits, eating and chatting, enjoying the end of the month.
Gale, too, had received her first paycheck. She had only been working for less than a month, and she expected it to be small. But when she looked at the amount, her eyes widened in shock.
She hurried to Joe’s office and knocked on the door. “Mr. Joe, I think there’s been a mistake with my paycheck.”
Joe looked up from his desk, a smile spreading across his face. “It’s been double-checked, Gale. There’s no mistake.”
“But… ten thousand dollars?” she stammered, her surprise evident.
Joe nodded. “Yes. This month’s salary is a bit lower, but that’s just for the start. It’ll be higher going forward. Wood Group is the top company in Sea City. We never disappoint our employees when it comes to compensation.”
Gale blinked in disbelief. She had never expected such an amount, especially not in her first month.
Joe chuckled. “Hahaha, Shawn adores you deeply, but I appreciate you too, Gale. You’re my chief designer, after all. The development of Lovito wouldn’t be the same without your contributions. And as time goes on, you’ll receive commissions. You’ll be a rich woman!”
A rich woman?
Gale couldn’t help but smile awkwardly at the thought. With everything going on in her life, she didn’t dare imagine such a thing.
“Thank you, Mr. Joe,” she said gratefully. “I’ll do my job well.”
Joe waved his hand dismissively. “No need to thank me. Besides, you and Summer are best friends, so it doesn’t hurt to be a little partial, right?”
Gale raised an eyebrow, surprised by his words. “Summer and I are best friends. What does that have to do with me? Wait… Could it be that… you like her?”
Joe laughed loudly at her teasing. “Oh, no. No, no. I’m just saying that because of your friendship, I’m a bit more lenient with you. But Summer? She’s not my type, I promise.”
Gale laughed, feeling lighter than she had in a long time. For a moment, it felt good to forget the chaos in her personal life and simply enjoy a normal conversation.
But deep down, she knew that the storm was far from over.
