Chapter 72
At this point, Gale could only admit the painful truth.
“Yes, you’re right,” she whispered.
Shawn’s eyes darkened. “You refused to draw blood before because you wanted to protect this child, didn’t you?”
Gale nodded. “Yes.”
With each confession, Shawn’s anger grew, his control slipping further. “Do you think I won’t kill you? Gale, do you think I’m not serious?”
Gale raised her head defiantly, her voice barely a whisper. “I’ve never thought that way. Go ahead, Shawn. Do it. Kill me now.”
She closed her eyes, bracing for the worst.
In that moment, Gale knew that once Shawn discovered the child, her life would be in immediate danger. She had no illusions about who he was. How could he ever tolerate such betrayal? There was no mercy in his eyes. She could feel it.
“You’re really hilarious,” Shawn sneered. His hands tightened around her neck, choking the words out of her. “You think I’ll keep you around to torment you day after day and won’t kill you? Oh, how dare you treat me like a fool!”
The air was draining from her lungs, and with each passing second, her vision grew dimmer. Her body struggled for breath, and the lack of oxygen was starting to cloud her mind. If this continued, she would be dead in less than twenty seconds.
Just as Gale thought her life was over, Shawn suddenly released her, and she collapsed in a fit of coughing, her chest searing with pain.
“No, Gale,” Shawn’s voice came, cold and ruthless. “You shouldn’t die like this. You should watch with your own eyes as the child you’re so desperate to protect leaves your body.” His voice was like something from hell itself.
Gale’s eyes widened in horror. She gasped for air, still trembling from the near-death experience.
“Five weeks. It hasn’t fully formed yet. Just a small embryo,” Shawn said, his words cutting through the thick air.
“Shawn…” Gale’s voice trembled, barely a whisper. She could hardly process what he was saying.
This was the cruelest thing he could have said. To make her watch as he tore her child away from her… It was worse than dying.
“It doesn’t matter,” Shawn continued, his voice icy. “Even if it’s just a small embryo, I can have the doctor remove it completely. You’ll get a good look at what this ‘evil seed’ looks like.”
Gale’s heart sank. This wasn’t mercy. He wasn’t offering her an escape—he was offering her the most brutal punishment imaginable.
“Kill me, Shawn. Just kill me now,” she cried, her voice raw with desperation.
Shawn’s cold laughter filled the air. “First, I’ll kill this child, and then it’ll be your turn.”
His anger was overwhelming. It seemed like he wanted to destroy her entirely, consume her with his rage.
The image of what he wanted to do to her and her child twisted inside her mind, unbearable. She couldn’t bring herself to imagine it—how could she? To see her child ripped from her body, to watch as it was destroyed… It was worse than death itself.
Unknowingly, the car had come to a stop at Temperley Hall. The driver had slipped away silently, and the atmosphere inside the car had thickened to an almost unbearable level. The tension was so heavy, it felt like a blade could cut through the air.
Outside the car, the lights shone brightly, but no one dared to approach. Everyone knew better than to cross that line.
Shawn straightened up in his seat, his expression colder than ever. “Gale, whose child is this?”
Gale shook her head, too afraid to speak.
“Don’t want to tell me?” Shawn’s voice was ice. He sneered, adding, “I can guess. It must belong to Sam, right?”
“No! It’s not his!” Gale’s voice cracked with the denial.
Shawn’s eyes narrowed, his gaze sharp. “The more you deny it, the more it proves that the child belongs to him.”
“It’s really not!” Gale pleaded, her voice shaky.
Shawn leaned in closer. “Then who is the father of this child, Gale?” he demanded.
Gale had no answer.
It was absurd. Here she was, fighting to protect a child, and yet she didn’t even know who the father was. The truth had been buried in confusion and fear, and now it felt like she was fighting this battle all alone.
