Chapter 70
“I am giving it to you. Just take it!”
Gale shook her head. “This is food meant for men. It strengthens immunity. I can’t eat this.”
Shawn was determined. He reached for the bowl, frustration written all over his face. He decided to force-feed her. Lifting a spoonful of soup, he commanded, “Open your mouth.”
Her lips remained tightly sealed.
But Gale couldn’t ignore the overpowering smell of herbs and meat. The pungent scent made her stomach churn, and the wave of nausea surged quickly.
Before Shawn could feed her, Gale suddenly stood up, pressing a hand to her mouth. She bent over and retched into a nearby trash can, the sound echoing through the dining room.
Shawn’s face darkened. “Why are you vomiting so frequently?”
Tears welled in Gale’s eyes, but she couldn’t offer him any explanation.
After a few moments, she managed to stop retching. But as soon as she stood up and caught sight of the soup, she felt the bile rise again.
Shawn, still sitting with his legs crossed, coldly watched her. He handed her a glass of water.
Gale rinsed her mouth and slowly recovered. She quickly made an excuse. “I just don’t like this food very much.”
Afraid that Shawn might suspect something, she added, “Really, I’ve been prone to nausea since I was a child.”
Shawn looked at the housekeeper. “Did you hear that? She can’t stand the smell. Tell Grandpa to stop sending this.”
“Yes, Mr. Wood.”
Shawn, clearly losing his appetite, put down his utensils and left. Gale wiped her mouth and followed behind him.
She moved slowly, missing the car, and had to walk to work instead.
As soon as they left, the spy Lucas had stationed at the house rushed off to report the news.
At the Wood family home, Lucas was on the phone.
“What? Gale vomited this morning?”
“Yes, sir, I saw it with my own eyes.”
“Is it the first time, or has it been happening often?”
The servant replied, “From what I overheard, she’s been vomiting a lot recently.”
“That’s odd… This only happens when a pregnant woman is unhappy,” Lucas said, his voice thoughtful.
“You think she’s pregnant?”
“It’s possible!” Lucas slapped his thigh in excitement. “I might get to hold my great-grandson! Alright, I’ll have Shawn take her to the hospital for a check-up.”
Paula, who had been listening nearby, couldn’t help but interject. “How long have they been married? Isn’t this a bit fast, old man?”
Lucas waved her off. “Shawn’s young and energetic. Why couldn’t it happen this soon?”
Paula didn’t press the issue further, though she still had her doubts.
She thought about how she’d stopped giving Shawn the stews and soups recently. She used to give him these daily, but even if he hadn’t consumed much, it would definitely have affected his fertility.
She didn’t believe Gale could have gotten pregnant.
Meanwhile, Lucas was ecstatic. He quickly called Shawn.
In the president’s office, Shawn answered the call with a frown.
“Pregnant?” He scowled. “Grandpa, I think you’re just desperate to hold your grandson.”
He had never even touched Gale! How could she possibly conceive on her own?
Lucas was insistent. “Shawn, trust me. When your mother was pregnant with you, and your grandmother with my son, they had similar symptoms.”
“It was caused by the chicken soup you sent.”
“Just take her to the hospital for a check-up. It won’t hurt.”
Shawn’s refusal was firm. “I don’t have time.”
He was busy. Time was precious, and there were staff members lined up to meet him.
Lucas wouldn’t let it go. “You can send Fiona to take her. But the check-up must happen. I need to feel at ease!”
Shawn sighed, responding in a detached tone. “Understood.” He hung up the phone.
