Chapter 69
“If I didn’t get wiser, I would have died.”
“How many bags of blood would it take to kill you?”
Gale remained silent, but the answer echoed in her mind: It would have killed my child.
She spoke, “I can’t be a free mobile blood bank, giving blood every day.”
Shawn slid into the car, his expression dark as they drove.
The night’s chaos had turned out to be nothing more than a farce. Gale commented, “It’s frustrating to be toyed with like that. It’s a shame you can’t do anything to Susan. She’s the apple of your eye. If it were me… I don’t think nine lives would be enough to pay for that sin.”
“Shut up.”
Boldly, Gale pressed her forehead. “Or, you could go to church on the weekend.”
“What’s the meaning of that?”
“Go ask the priest if Susan has put a spell on you. The priest could exorcize it.”
Shawn swatted her hand away.
Someone of his stature wouldn’t like Susan. But the timing of her appearance had been far too convenient, and he had no choice but to take responsibility. So, despite his dislike, he had to accept it.
The strange feelings of that night lingered like a dream.
Gale’s mood lifted, and she clung to the child within her. She whispered to herself, Mommy will do everything to protect you. As long as there’s a chance, I won’t give up.
Before bed, she took another pill to prevent an abortion.
For the next few days, the housekeeper ensured Gale had healthy, nutritious meals. Shawn didn’t say a word but never touched any of the food. Gale took advantage of the situation, eating as much as she could, worried Shawn might suddenly lose his appetite and take the food away. With the healthy meals and medicine, Gale’s health improved, and color returned to her cheeks.
One morning, Shawn entered the dining room and took his seat at the head of the table. Holding his coffee, he glanced at the dishes before his face darkened.
“Housekeeper!”
“Yes, Mr. Wood?”
Shawn pushed a plate aside, his voice cold. “What is all this?”
The housekeeper hesitated. “These are not prepared by our chefs.”
“Paula sent them?”
“No, Mr. Lucas Wood sent them,” the housekeeper clarified. “He heard that your wife was trying to improve her health, and he thought he should do the same for you.”
Shawn’s lips tightened into a thin line.
The housekeeper continued, “This is nourishing chicken soup… and this is…”
“Enough!” Shawn snapped.
The sight of these foods in the morning was enough to make him want to scream. His face darkened even more.
Gale lowered her head, fighting back a smile, nearly burying her face in her bowl.
Shawn had met his match! It seemed only the old man could control him.
“Take it away. Immediately!” Shawn barked.
The housekeeper shot a glance at the servant standing nearby, one of the old man’s spies. Realizing the spy was watching, Shawn’s frustration only grew.
He glanced at Gale, her eyes gleaming with amusement, and then shoved the chicken soup toward her with a grim expression.
“Gale.”
“Yes?” She looked up, still grinning.
“Drink this.”
“Why? Don’t you want to eat it and get better?” Shawn raised an eyebrow. “Your health will improve with this.”
“I’m sorry. It’s Grandpa’s gift to you. He just means well,” Gale teased.
