Chapter 67
It was clear that the only reason Gale was there was to give more blood in order to save the dean. Susan’s voice was dripping with false concern as she said, “Gale, I’ll leave it to you. Although you harmed my father, he will definitely thank you when he gets better.”
Gale stood frozen, unmoving. The manipulation in Susan’s words grated on her nerves.
“Mr. Wood… help me convince her,” Susan pleaded, directing her words at Shawn.
Shawn glanced at Gale, fully aware of how dangerous this was for her health after three days of constant blood donation. But still, he coldly said, “Gale, go to draw blood.”
“Okay,” Gale agreed without hesitation, her cheerfulness belying the discomfort she felt inside.
Susan was taken aback. “You… you agreed?”
“Yeah. Saving lives is a good deed,” Gale replied calmly. “However, before I donate my blood, I have a small request.”
Shawn nodded. “Speak.”
“I want to go in and have a look at the dean. I don’t know how he’s doing now, but I can feel better just by taking a look,” Gale explained, her voice sincere, though she was only pretending to care.
Susan immediately objected, “No.”
Gale raised an eyebrow. “Why? I’ll just look at him for two minutes. What’s the harm in that?”
Susan hesitated, clearly flustered. “No! I…”
She couldn’t risk Gale seeing the truth. If Gale discovered the dean’s condition wasn’t as it seemed, everything would fall apart. It would expose their scheme.
“Why?” Gale pressed. “What are you hiding? Is there something shameful about it?”
“No! It’s just that… I…” Susan’s face was flushed with anxiety, and it was evident she had no idea how to handle Gale’s demand.
Gale continued, “I’m feeling very guilty too. If the dean had a brain hemorrhage because of his emotions, it’s my fault.” She turned to Shawn for support. “When he gets better, you’ll…”
Shawn interrupted, his voice sharp. “Okay. You can go in. Two minutes.”
Gale’s heart skipped a beat. Shawn’s approval had given her the opportunity to investigate. If Susan refused now, it would certainly raise suspicions.
“Then I’ll go in too!” Susan declared, trying to take control of the situation.
Gale nodded in agreement, her tone smooth. “Okay. Let’s all go together. After all, it’s been so many days. We should have a good understanding of the dean’s situation.”
Before Susan could respond, Gale took a step forward, pulling Shawn along with her. They entered the intensive care unit together, with Susan quickly trailing behind them, clearly upset.
Inside the room, the dean lay motionless on the hospital bed, his forehead wrapped in gauze. He was surrounded by medical equipment, looking extremely fragile.
Gale approached the bed and squatted down, holding the dean’s hand gently. “I’m so sorry. If I had known you were ill, I would have accepted your gift. It’s all my fault.”
She put on a display of regret, but secretly, her grip tightened around the dean’s hand. His skin was warm to the touch. How could a supposedly comatose patient have such body heat?
Gale squeezed harder, trying to make sure that the dean would show any sign of life. She was determined to prove that everything was an act.
Just as Gale was preparing to apply more pressure, Susan rushed forward, panic in her voice. “Stay away from my dad!”
She tried to shove Gale aside, but Gale held her ground, not letting go of the dean’s hand.
“I just wanted to say a few words to the dean,” Gale said, her voice calm but firm. “Why are you so nervous? He has so many tubes in his body—stop pushing me!”
But Susan was relentless. “Just talk to him. Don’t do anything to my dad!”
In a frantic push, Susan shoved Gale harder, but Gale refused to release her grip. They were silently battling for control, neither willing to give in.
