Chapter 57
Gale bit her lower lip, feeling cold and weak. A normal person could only donate 400 milliliters at most, but as a pregnant woman, she had been forced to give up 600 milliliters all at once.
Susan had set a perfect trap. Gale could only imagine that this wouldn’t be the last time. They would continue to drain her until her body couldn’t handle it anymore — until the baby was at risk.
Footsteps echoed in the hallway, and Shawn appeared at the door. “Are you done?”
“Yes, I’ll take it to the emergency room right away,” the nurse responded respectfully.
Shawn waved her off and stepped into the room. He stood in front of Gale, his expression as cold as ever. “The dean suffered a sudden cerebral hemorrhage because of you, so it’s only natural for you to donate blood.”
“Do you know how many milliliters of blood was drawn from me?” Gale’s voice trembled, her body still weak from the loss.
“They can take as much as needed,” Shawn replied indifferently. To him, this was just another part of the equation. Saving a life was paramount, after all.
Gale managed a weak, humorless smile. “Ha… after all, the dean is your future father-in-law. His life is more important than mine, isn’t it?”
Shawn’s eyes hardened. “I don’t have a father anymore. I can’t let Susan lose hers.”
Gale, frustrated, couldn’t help herself. “Why does Susan get your favor?”
“Because she is my woman,” he answered flatly.
Gale’s heart twisted. “Because she’s your woman… Because of what she did that night, using her body to help you, right?” She struggled to keep her voice steady.
Shawn remained silent for a moment, as if thinking over her words. Then he answered, his tone colder than before. “Gale, you are here to atone for your sins.”
Her heart dropped. “Atone? Atone for what?”
Looking up at his handsome, yet emotionless face, Gale felt a chill run through her. He lowered his head slightly, his voice filled with a detached cruelty. “Your father killed my father. Do you still want to kill Susan’s father?”
Gale’s eyes widened with shock and anger. “I didn’t hurt him! I didn’t do anything!”
“I watched the surveillance footage,” Shawn said, his gaze sharp. “He just wanted to give you a gift with a smile, but what did you do? You pushed him away in disgust and dropped the gift. You refused his kindness, causing him to get emotional and have a brain hemorrhage. So yes, it’s your responsibility.”
The accusation hit her like a blade, and she struggled to find her words. It was all a lie, a complete slander. Dean and Susan had designed this whole setup to trap her, and no matter how hard she tried, she was caught in their web.
“I was framed…” Gale choked out, her voice barely a whisper. “Only the person who framed me knows how innocent I was.”
But no one believed her. Not Shawn, not Susan. No one.
She wanted to touch her stomach, hoping that somehow, the child inside her could be saved. But with Shawn standing right there, she couldn’t even move without fear.
Slowly, Gale rose to her feet, her legs shaky and weak from blood loss. “I’ll go,” she said, her voice barely audible.
Shawn watched her indifferently, his gaze cold and unmoving.
Her blood had yet to clot from the wound, and fresh droplets stained her pale skin, a stark contrast to her fragile condition. The dizziness overwhelmed her, and she could barely manage to walk toward the door.
Just before she collapsed, a pair of hands caught her.
“Gale!” Shawn’s voice was distant, but there was something almost… concerned in his tone.
She struggled to open her eyes, but it was no use. Her body was too weak, and soon, darkness took over.
Her child… her child was all she could think about before she lost consciousness.
Shawn stood frozen, gazing down at the woman in his arms. His brow furrowed, a trace of concern flickering in his eyes as he looked at her pale, bloodless face.
She was so frail, so fragile… yet why did it disturb him so much?
He shouldn’t feel anything for her.
Before he could process his thoughts, Susan hurried over. “Mr. Wood, the blood has been taken to the emergency room. What happened to Gale? I’ll help her to the lounge.”
Shawn gave a terse nod. “Okay.”
He handed Gale over to Susan and turned to leave the hospital, leaving the woman in Susan’s care. When Gale finally woke up, it was already late at night.
