Chapter 56
Shawn bent down and helped Susan to her feet, his movements smooth and deliberate. Once, he had lost his respected father because of Dr. Warm, and now, history seemed to be repeating itself. How could Shawn allow Susan to suffer the same fate he had? The dean was going to be his future father-in-law, after all.
“Gale, you have to give up your blood. You don’t have a choice,” Shawn said, his voice cold and unyielding.
It felt as if she were nothing more than a puppet, always at his mercy, living a life controlled by his whims.
“Whether it’s my fault or not, I still have to donate blood to save the dean?” Gale asked, her voice trembling with the weight of the situation.
“Yes,” Shawn responded simply.
“Even if drawing blood could cause massive damage to my body, you still insist on it?” Gale’s voice cracked with disbelief.
Shawn’s eyes narrowed slightly as he said, “It’s just a blood draw. You’ll recover in two days.”
Susan, ever quick to echo Shawn’s sentiment, immediately added, “Yes, it won’t kill you, and it won’t hurt you. Gale, please, just save my father!”
Gale couldn’t believe what she was hearing. From the moment she had seen the dean, she had fallen straight into their trap. Shawn didn’t know she was pregnant, but Susan and the dean must have been aware. How could they ask her to donate blood when she was carrying a child? Besides, Gale had no doubt that Susan had bribed the nurse to take more than what was necessary.
Shawn’s voice sliced through her thoughts, his tone commanding. “Nurse, take her away.”
A cold shiver ran down Gale’s spine as she instinctively turned to run, but her feet felt as though they were glued to the floor. Shawn’s words echoed in her mind like a haunting reminder.
“You know the consequences of running away.”
Her heart raced. Her mother was at his mercy, her father was imprisoned, and her own injuries had been tolerated by Shawn’s silence. He had allowed Susan to hurt her before, and it was clear now that he was backing her again.
Shawn’s cold voice continued, “Just drawing a few tubes of blood won’t kill you. Be obedient and go. You’ll suffer less.”
Gale closed her eyes in despair. “You won’t understand,” she whispered.
He stared at her, an unreadable look on his face. “Explain it to me.”
Susan, eager to add her voice to the manipulation, chimed in, “Yes, tell him. You won’t dare to say anything about your pregnancy, will you?”
Gale fell silent, her eyes dropping to the floor. Susan’s smug expression confirmed Gale’s fear — they knew, and they were using it against her.
“Blood drawing room is here,” the nurse said, her tone impersonal. “Come with me.”
The nurse seemed to gently hold Gale’s hand, but the pressure behind it was unmistakable — it was more of a drag than a gentle guidance.
Gale glanced back. Susan had her head bowed, but Shawn was there, comforting her. His hand rested on Susan’s shoulder, his attention fully on her, as if Gale wasn’t even in the room.
From Gale’s angle, she caught the corners of Susan’s mouth turning upward into a satisfied smile. Gale’s stomach twisted.
As the nurse prepared the needle, Gale’s anxiety spiked. She had always been terrified of injections, and the idea of blood being drawn now, with her pregnancy at stake, was unbearable. But the weight of Shawn’s threat froze her in place. She couldn’t run. She couldn’t scream. She could only sit there, her body and mind tortured.
“How much are you taking from me?” Gale managed to ask, her voice barely above a whisper.
The nurse’s expression was neutral. “Oh, I can take as much as I want.”
Before Gale could react, the needle was inserted into her vein, and she could feel the warm, dark blood flowing out of her body, filling the bag.
“Enough!” Gale gasped, her voice strained. “You can only take so much at one time!”
But the nurse didn’t stop. She tightened her grip on Gale’s arm. “Don’t move. I’m not responsible for any injury if you do.”
Gale’s head began to spin as the nurse continued. “It’s three hundred…” she murmured weakly.
But still, the nurse didn’t stop. The needle stayed in, and Gale could feel her strength draining away. By the time the nurse finally withdrew the needle, Gale felt utterly drained. Six hundred milliliters of blood. “That’s enough,” the nurse said.
Gale’s head swam with dizziness. She felt weak, her body betraying her as the room seemed to tilt around her. But none of that mattered to Shawn or Susan. To them, she was just a vessel to be used, her body a tool to achieve their goals.
