Chapter 54
Susan’s voice trembled as she spoke to her father, “Dad, tell me what I should do?”
The dean sat back in his chair, deep in thought. “Let me think about it.”
Susan, unable to contain her frustration, paced back and forth on the sofa. “She got pregnant in just one try! If only I were so lucky…” She sighed in regret. It was a cruel irony—while Gale seemed to have the good fortune of conceiving quickly, Susan had been unable to even get close to Shawn. Despite all her attempts, he had never shown interest.
Then, a thought occurred to the dean. “Yes!” he exclaimed, clapping his hands. He leaned closer to his daughter and whispered a plan into her ear.
Susan’s face lit up with a sinister smile. “That will work!” she said. “Okay, I’ll act now!”
Back at the Wood Group, Gale suddenly sneezed several times. A chill ran through her body, and she felt a little off.
“Are you catching a cold?” Summer, her colleague, asked, concerned, as she handed Gale a tissue. “Put on more layers. Your health is important.”
“I’m fine,” Gale replied with a faint smile, though her nose itched slightly. She got up, intending to leave the office.
But just as she was about to exit, a colleague stopped her. “Ms. Warm, someone is looking for you.”
“Me?” Gale asked, surprised.
“Yes, you should go have a look,” the colleague urged.
Gale wondered who would come looking for her at the company, especially after all the drama with the Wood family. As she reached the front door, she saw a familiar face—Dean, smiling and holding gifts in both hands.
She froze for a moment. “It’s you? What are you doing here?” she asked, wary.
When she had been in the mental hospital, Dean had never shown her kindness. He had even sold her off to an old man. His daughter, Susan, had hurt her countless times. Something about this was off.
“I bought something. I want to give it to you,” Dean said, still grinning.
Gale’s suspicion deepened. “There must be something behind this. I can’t believe you’re being good-hearted all of a sudden.”
“I really want to give you something to help replenish your body. After all, you’re pregnant,” Dean continued, his smile still too perfect.
Gale immediately looked around, making sure no one else could hear them.
Dean’s smile remained as he added, “Look, you’re frightened. Gale, you must understand—you’re Mrs. Wood now. But you’re pregnant with a child out of wedlock. If that comes to light, how tragic would your life be?”
Gale’s anger flared. “Who was it that night?” she demanded, her voice low but intense. “Only you know!”
Dean leaned in, a sly glint in his eye. “Want to know? Take the supplements.”
“I don’t want them!” Gale snapped, stepping back warily. “Who knows what’s in them!”
Dean, unfazed, took a step closer, holding the gift out to her. “Take it.”
“I said I don’t want it!” Gale repeated firmly, her patience wearing thin. She pushed the gift away, but Dean persisted, forcing it into her hands.
Gale’s frustration grew, and she shoved the gift away harder. “Don’t you understand plain English? I don’t want it!”
The gift flew from her hands, landing on the ground. The contents spilled out—ready-to-eat bird’s nests.
“Ah! You ruined it…” Dean began, but before he could finish, his face twisted in pain. He clutched his chest, his body swaying as if he were about to fall. His lips turned pale.
Gale was taken aback, her eyes widening. “You… you’re—”
Before she could finish speaking, Dean collapsed to the floor with a loud thud, his body hitting the ground heavily.
“Ah! Dad!” Susan’s voice rang out from somewhere nearby. She rushed forward, her eyes wild with panic. “Dad, what’s wrong? Wake up! Don’t scare me! Someone, call an ambulance—hurry!”
The scene quickly descended into chaos as security guards rushed over to the fallen man, and the people around him began to shout for help. Gale stood there, frozen, unable to process the sudden turn of events. She watched in stunned silence as a crowd of people swarmed around Dean’s lifeless body.
