Chapter 51
Shawn’s deep voice echoed through the room. “I’ll keep to my word.”
Gale’s determination flared. To get back her mother’s jade bracelet, she had to make Shawn believe that she could please him. But the more she thought about it, the more daunting the task seemed. Shawn was unpredictable, had a fiery temper, and appeared to have no weaknesses.
After a long period of deep thought, Gale finally decided to seek help. If anyone could provide her with insight into Shawn, it was Joe. They had been classmates and best friends for years. Surely, Joe knew more than anyone else about Shawn’s preferences.
“What does Shawn like?” Gale asked, genuinely curious.
Joe scratched his chin thoughtfully before responding, “He likes to lose his temper and scold people.”
Gale raised an eyebrow, not sure if Joe was being serious. “Mr. Winter, I’m asking for real advice.”
Joe smirked, clearly enjoying the moment. “Honestly, I don’t know either. Shawn is incredibly difficult to figure out. I often can’t tell what he’s thinking.”
Gale sighed. Was that really the case?
Joe continued, “But there’s one thing I do know. Shawn’s biggest desire.”
“What’s that?” Gale asked eagerly.
Joe leaned in and lowered his voice. “A good night’s sleep. He has insomnia. It’s been going on for years, and no amount of medicine has worked. But that sachet you made him? He’s kept it. He says it helps him sleep.”
Gale’s eyes lit up with hope. “Thank you, Mr. Winter!”
If she could help Shawn with his insomnia, maybe she would stand a chance at getting the jade bracelet back.
That night, she immediately began researching treatments for insomnia. She remembered that her father had taught her a thing or two about alternative remedies, and she was determined to find something that would help.
At Temperley Hall, Shawn ate his dinner in silence, the butler and servants attending to him. As he finished his meal, he suddenly spoke.
“Gale.”
“Yes?” She answered quickly, unsure of what was coming.
“Have you stared enough?”
Gale blinked, caught off guard. She hadn’t realized she was staring at him, but now she was embarrassed. She had been lost in thought, trying to figure out how to talk to him about his insomnia.
“You’ve been peeking at me ever since you came back from the company,” Shawn said, putting his utensils down and locking eyes with her. “Why? Do you want me?”
Gale almost choked, her face flushed with embarrassment. Before she could respond, Shawn reached out and wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her closer.
“If that’s the case, then I’ll satisfy you,” he said with a smirk.
Before Gale could protest, Shawn swept her off her feet and began walking upstairs.
“Shawn, you—” she started to say, but he cut her off.
“Don’t move,” he ordered coldly, tightening his grip around her.
He kicked open the door to the master bedroom and pushed her inside. Gale struggled to break free.
“My bed… is outside,” she said, her voice shaky as she tried to push away from him.
Shawn didn’t listen. He dragged her back into the room. “From now on, you’ll be sleeping inside.”
“Why?” Gale asked, confused.
Shawn looked at her with a piercing gaze. “Sleep on the floor or on the sofa. Don’t sleep outside again.”
“It’s nice outside!” she snapped, feeling a surge of frustration.
She broke free from his hold and quickly ran toward the door, planning to make a quick escape. But before she could reach the handle, she froze, her eyes widening.
“I just saw a sneaky figure at the entrance of the stairs. Who is that?” she asked, feigning surprise.
Shawn’s expression darkened. “Grandpa’s spy.”
“Spy?!” Gale gasped, stunned.
Shawn’s jaw tightened as he gave a short nod. “Grandpa wants a grandson from you.”
Gale instinctively placed her hand on her lower abdomen, her mind racing. “This… how is this possible? You wouldn’t let the enemy’s daughter give birth to your child,” she replied, trying to make sense of it.
“Indeed,” Shawn said, his tone sharp. “But Grandpa doesn’t care. As long as the child is mine, that’s all that matters. You can’t take away the child with the Wood family around.”
Gale’s heart skipped a beat. She had no idea what Shawn was really thinking, but she was beginning to realize that this might not be as simple as she had hoped.
