Chapter 49
Gale hesitated but knew she had to voice her concerns. “Mr. Wood, the wedding ring is sacred. It represents marriage and loyalty; it symbolizes love. It can’t be decided casually, and it shouldn’t be commercialized.”
Shawn raised an eyebrow, his expression turning icy. “Are you educating me?”
Before Gale could respond, Shawn’s phone rang, interrupting their conversation. He pulled it out and answered curtly, “Hello?”
“Mr. Wood, help! Come save me!” Susan’s frantic voice screeched through the receiver. “There’s a crazy woman here, she… she’s snatching my stuff… Ah! Go away!”
Shawn’s expression darkened, and his frown deepened. “Who?”
“I don’t know her. She… she said she’s your mother! Ah! It’s mine!”
Shawn immediately stood up, striding toward the door. “Stay here,” he commanded.
Fiona, looking perplexed, whispered, “Why would Mrs. Paula cause trouble with Susan?”
Gale stayed silent, lowering her head. She knew better than to get involved—this was a situation that would unfold on its own. Let the wicked fight amongst themselves!
Shawn’s voice rang out from the distance. “Gale, keep up!”
Well, it seemed like Gale would be witnessing this spectacle firsthand.
At River View Home, chaos erupted in the living room.
Susan glared at Paula, her voice sharp with anger. “I’ve already called Mr. Wood! He’ll be here soon… You’ll be doomed! How dare you pretend to be Mrs. Wood and steal my bracelet!”
Paula stood her ground, her expression cold. “I am Shawn’s mother. He will recognize me when he arrives! If you know anything about his character, you should hand over the bracelet immediately.”
Susan scoffed. “It’s my stuff! You’re a thief!”
Paula’s patience was wearing thin. “Did you buy it with your own money? How dare you claim it’s yours? It’s my family’s property!” she retorted, charging at Susan.
Susan quickly protected the jade bracelet on her wrist, trying to shield it from Paula’s relentless attacks.
“Give it to me!” Paula demanded, her tone harsh. Despite her age, she was strong and aggressive, pushing forward.
Susan’s wrists were becoming bruised from the force, but she fought to keep the bracelet secure. “You crazy woman… help!” she shouted, her voice trembling. “I bought this jade bracelet myself! It has nothing to do with you or the Wood family!”
“Don’t try to lie to me!” Paula snapped. With one swift motion, she grabbed Susan’s wrist and yanked the bracelet off. She shoved it into her pocket, clearly pleased with her victory.
Without looking back, she turned and walked toward the door, eager to leave the conflict behind her. But Susan, unwilling to let go, chased after her. “Stop! Give it back to me!”
Just as the two women were nearing the door, Shawn’s voice cut through the tension. “What’s the trouble?”
Susan immediately began to sob, running to Shawn for protection. “President Wood, it was her! She’s pretending to be your mother and grabbing my bracelet!”
Gale, folding her arms, couldn’t resist speaking up. “She’s not pretending. She’s real. It’s just… she’s his stepmother.”
Paula clutched the jade bracelet tightly, her eyes flashing with indignation. “Shawn, you would give such a precious and spiritual jade to a woman who’s so unimportant? I can’t accept that!”
Shawn’s gaze was unreadable. “What jade?”
“This bracelet!” Paula quickly pulled it out of her pocket and shook it in front of him.
Shawn paused, processing the situation. “You two were fighting over this jade bracelet?”
“Yes!” Paula barked. “If you gave it to Gale, I wouldn’t have a problem, but this vixen…” She glared at Susan. “I’ll be the first to refuse her!”
Susan screamed back, “You’re the vixen! You must have slithered your way into the family!”
Shawn, unbothered by the accusations, replied coldly, “That bracelet is fake. The real jade bracelet is with me.”
The room fell into stunned silence.
