Chapter 35
Gale gave a faint smile. “I have nothing to bear because I don’t have the right to be angry.”
Pain flashed in Sam’s eyes.
She added, “Okay, just don’t cross Shawn. It won’t do you any good.” To crush any lingering hope Sam had, she continued, “And I won’t be moved either.”
Shawn had always been concerned about her past with Sam. Moreover, she was now the Chief Designer at Wood’s Jewelry Department, while Sam was the General Manager at Fantastic Jewels. They were now rivals, and that made everything even more complicated.
The room was filled with chatter, laughter, and the clinking of champagne glasses. Everyone was dressed to the nines, enjoying themselves. Gale found a quiet corner and focused on nibbling on the small appetizers scattered across the table.
Shawn, as usual, was the center of attention. A large group surrounded him, all trying to flatter him and earn his favor.
“President Wood, is this Mrs. Wood?” someone asked, glancing between Shawn and Susan.
Shawn didn’t respond, leaving the question hanging in the air.
Susan, with a confident smile, answered instead, “My identity isn’t so important. Anyway, the person with him now is me.”
The crowd quickly understood. It seemed that this woman wasn’t Mrs. Wood, but she certainly held a higher position than the official Mrs. Wood. She was, in fact, Shawn’s companion for the evening.
The compliments began to pour in.
“Miss Susan, you’re so beautiful.”
“Wow, so talented and stunning.”
“Miss Susan, we’d love to have you spend more time with my wife.”
Susan soaked in the praise, clearly enjoying the attention. The same directors and producers who had once ignored her were now rushing to flatter her.
Meanwhile, Shawn’s face showed signs of boredom. He was tired of these kinds of social events. His eyes scanned the room, eventually landing on Gale.
Even in the corner, dressed simply and elegantly, Gale stood out. Her beauty couldn’t be hidden, and despite her quiet presence, she seemed to glow.
Gale, enjoying her small cake, had no idea that Shawn was looking at her. But as she turned, she caught the faintest glimpse of his gaze before he quickly looked away.
Susan had noticed the exchange and, feeling possessive, turned to Shawn. “Mr. Wood, I’ll be right back. I’m going to the bathroom.”
“Okay,” Shawn replied absently, not paying her much attention as she walked away.
Susan made a beeline for Gale. Without making a sound, she stood behind Gale, waiting for the right moment.
Gale, unaware of her presence, turned around with her cake, and in the process, accidentally bumped into Susan. The cake splattered, and cream landed on Susan’s expensive dress.
“Ah! My dress!” Susan screamed in outrage.
Before Gale could react, Susan shot an accusing look at her. “You did this on purpose, didn’t you? You’re just jealous of me! What are you going to do about it? The banquet has barely started. Do you even have enough money to pay for this dress?”
The crowd quickly gathered around, eager to see the drama unfold. After all, Susan was Shawn’s companion, so they flocked to her side. As for Gale… well, no one really knew who she was.
Gale, staying calm, spoke up. “You stood behind me without saying anything. I didn’t even know you were there.” She gave a soft, almost apologetic shrug. “You should be more careful next time.”
“You dirtied my dress and now you’re blaming me?” Susan shot back, her voice dripping with disdain.
Gale wasn’t interested in getting into a petty argument. She simply reached into her bag for a tissue. “I’ll wipe it off for you,” she said, offering it as a peace gesture.
“It won’t come off!” Susan snapped. “You’ve ruined it. Now, take off your dress and give it to me!”
