Chapter 21
As soon as Gale arrived at work, she heard the sound of hurried footsteps approaching. When she looked up, her stomach dropped—it was Susan.
What did she want now?
Susan’s voice rang out arrogantly, “Gale, come here! Stop acting like a turtle!”
Gale stood up cautiously. “What’s going on?”
“You’ll find out soon enough. Take her away!” Susan barked.
Two large men suddenly appeared, rushing toward Gale. One of them grabbed her and began dragging her out of the office.
Gale immediately struggled, her voice rising in panic. “Let go of me! What are you doing? You can’t just kidnap me in broad daylight!”
Her colleagues stared, stunned by the scene. Gale pleaded, “Call the police! Call security!”
But Susan’s voice cut through the chaos. “Don’t you dare help her! If you do, you’ll lose your jobs!”
Gale couldn’t believe what was happening. Susan was so bold, even coming to the company to kidnap her. What kind of power did Shawn give her?
Susan sneered, her eyes gleaming with malice. “Don’t waste your energy, Gale. No one’s coming to save you. You’re nothing but a lowlife.”
Gale’s voice trembled with defiance. “What are you doing, Susan?”
“I’m just in a bad mood today. I want to vent my anger on you,” Susan spat back, her voice laced with venom.
She led Gale to a narrow alley, where two more men stood guard at both entrances, ensuring no one could interfere. Gale was trapped.
“Excuse me?” Gale said, a bitter laugh escaping her lips. “Who do you think you are?”
Susan’s eyes darkened. “How dare you talk to me like that? Didn’t the whips teach you anything? Or was your belly too strong yesterday?”
Susan’s anger flared as she recalled the failed attempt to force the child out of Gale.
But Gale wasn’t intimidated. “You’re wasting your time, Susan. If Shawn can’t hurt me, you can’t either. You’re nothing to him!”
Susan’s face twisted in fury. “I’ll be his wife soon, so you’d better shut up!”
“I am his wife!” Gale shot back, her voice steady despite the tension.
Susan clenched her fists in anger. “You won’t be for long.”
Gale remained calm, her gaze steady. “You don’t know Shawn at all. If you think you can get away with this, you’re wrong. If he finds out what you’re doing, you won’t escape so easily.”
Susan’s eyes gleamed with a dangerous light. “Believe what you want, Gale. But today, I won’t leave any marks on your body. Shawn won’t know a thing.”
She began to approach Gale, a cruel smile on her face. Gale’s heart raced. She could handle pain on a normal day, but now, with the child inside her, she had to protect him at all costs.
Gale’s hand instinctively pressed against her abdomen, and her eyes darted around, searching for any chance to escape.
Susan grabbed her hair and yanked it back. “Stay still! This won’t take long.”
Then, with no warning, she kicked Gale in the stomach.
The pain was sharp and sudden. Desperately, Gale pushed Susan away and ran, heart pounding in her chest.
“Stop her!” Susan screamed, her voice shrill. “Don’t just stand there!”
Gale didn’t look back. She had no choice but to run. If Susan caught her again, the child would be in danger. She couldn’t afford to let that happen.
Something felt strange. The men guarding the exits seemed to be slowing down.
Gale pushed forward with everything she had, sprinting toward freedom. She burst out of the alley just as Susan’s angry shouts echoed behind her. “Gale, you bitch…”
But then, she stopped, her words trailing off in shock.
Standing at the mouth of the alley was Shawn.
Gale’s heart skipped a beat. There, with his hands in his pockets and an icy expression on his face, he stood like a wall of steel. The two bodyguards flanking him were clearly professionals, each carrying a sharp Swiss Army knife. No one dared to make a move.
“Shawn…” Gale whispered, relief flooding her in an instant.
Without hesitation, she ran toward him, feeling an overwhelming sense of safety for the first time. Despite all the tension between them, she knew he would keep her alive. And more importantly, he wouldn’t let anything happen to her child.
Shawn’s lips pressed into a thin line as he watched her approach.
Gale’s legs gave out beneath her, and she collapsed to the ground, her strength drained from the ordeal.
“Stupid woman,” Shawn muttered under his breath, his tone flat.
He reached down, his expression impassive, and effortlessly lifted her into his arms.
Gale clung to his sleeve, tears welling up as she murmured, “You’re here… Thank goodness… you’re here…”
