Chapter 20
Susan couldn’t hide her satisfaction. Gale’s misfortune was finally her gain.
Shawn sensed something was off. “Gale, why are you bleeding?”
Despite being on the verge of fainting, Gale refused to reveal the truth about her pregnancy. She bit her lower lip, forcing out the words, “It’s just my… period.”
Shawn’s face twisted in disgust.
Susan quickly seized the moment, pretending to be concerned. “Mr. Wood, do you want to take her to the hospital? She seems to be in pain.”
With the child gone, Susan saw an opportunity. If Shawn took Gale to the hospital, he would discover the pregnancy and punish her for the affair. It was the perfect plan to destroy her.
“It’s just her menstrual cycle,” Shawn replied coldly, his voice sharp and emotionless. “She won’t die. Don’t worry about her.”
Without a glance in Gale’s direction, he walked past her, his indifference palpable. Susan, walking proudly beside him, couldn’t suppress her glee.
Gale, struggling to sit up, gasped, “Help… help…”
The housekeeper, horrified by the scene, rushed over. “What… what happened?”
Desperate, Gale grabbed the housekeeper’s hand, clinging to it as if it were her lifeline. “Take me to the hospital—immediately!”
If they acted quickly enough, perhaps the child could still be saved.
“Yes, Mrs. Gale!” the housekeeper responded urgently.
They rushed to the hospital, where the doctor immediately took charge. Without saying a word, Gale was pushed into the operating room.
The moment she lay on the operating table, her body gave way to exhaustion, and she lost consciousness.
Two hours later, the doctor emerged, letting out a sigh of relief. “Fortunately, both the mother and child are safe.”
The housekeeper, shocked, whispered to himself, “Mother… and child? Was she pregnant?”
The nurse began wheeling Gale out of the operating room, just as Susan’s father, Dean Fanning, walked by wearing a mask.
Noticing Gale lying on the bed, Dean paused. When he overheard the doctor’s words, it hit him: Gale was carrying President Wood’s child!
He quickly retreated into a corner and dialed Susan’s number.
“Susan, something’s happened!” he said, his voice frantic.
Susan, who had been feeling secure, was caught off guard. “What’s going on, Dad? You sound like you’re panicking.”
“I passed by the operating room just now and overheard the doctor say that Gale and her child are safe!” Dean explained.
Susan’s phone slipped from her hand in shock.
What? Gale’s child had survived? Impossible!
When Gale finally regained consciousness, it was already dark. She stared at the ceiling, tears slipping from her eyes.
The nurse entered the room, holding some paperwork. “Gale, here’s the bill for your medicine and ultrasound. Do you have any family here?”
“Medicine? Ultrasound?” Gale blinked, confused.
“Yes, the doctor prescribed some medication for you,” the nurse confirmed.
Gale froze for a moment before suddenly sitting up, panic rising in her chest. “My child…”
The nurse smiled kindly. “He’s safe. You should thank the doctor.”
Tears welled up in Gale’s eyes, but this time, they were tears of joy. She smiled through the pain, overwhelmed by relief.
“Thank you… thank you…” she whispered over and over. “I thought I had lost him… right after finding out I was pregnant…”
After taking her medication and undergoing the necessary examination, Gale didn’t hesitate—she left the hospital as quickly as she could. There was no excuse for her prolonged stay. No one could find out that she was pregnant.
Back at Temperley Hall, the house was quiet and spotless, with no traces of the bloodshed she had endured. Gale collapsed onto the floor, her face pale, drained of all color.
“My child,” she whispered softly, her heart heavy. “You’ve been through so much… just to be born to a mother like me.”
But there was no time for self-pity. Gale couldn’t afford to show weakness. She had work the next day. She had to pretend nothing was wrong, to act as though everything was normal. No matter the pain, she would have to pretend it was just her period.
The next day, she would face the world again.
