Chapter 100
Gale was determined to end it all.
She ran with all the strength she had, the wind biting her face as her heart raced. Shawn’s long legs quickly closed the gap between them. “Stop, Gale!” he yelled, his voice a roar that cut through the night air, echoing across the grounds. “Guards, stop her!”
Panic gripped his chest, and his voice trembled, betraying the fear he couldn’t hide.
Gale, her skirts pulled up, gritted her teeth and pushed forward, slamming past a security guard with her shoulder. She wasn’t going to stop—nothing could make her. The lake was in her sights, the only way out of the suffocating reality she had been trapped in.
Shawn was almost there, too close. His footsteps thundered behind her. She took a final leap, her body light and agile, landing on the fence. With one foot pressed against the cold metal, she jumped without a second thought.
Shawn reached out, his hand just grazing the hem of her skirt. The fabric tore with a sharp rip, and he was left holding only a piece of it. Without hesitation, Gale disappeared into the water, her body disappearing beneath the surface with a loud splash.
The moonlight shimmered on the water, casting a silver glow across the lake. For a moment, the ripples surged, but then, the water returned to calm, as if nothing had ever happened.
Shawn stood there, frozen in shock, staring at the still water, his mind struggling to comprehend what had just unfolded. She had jumped, right in front of him, without a single glance back. She hadn’t hesitated. She hadn’t stopped.
How desperate was she? How far had he pushed her?
The thought hit him like a punch to the gut. Was this his fault? Had he really pushed her to this point? To the point where she would rather die than live by his side?
“No!” He shouted, his voice hoarse with emotion. “Gale, if you want to die, you have to get my consent!”
His face twisted with determination, and before he could even think, he dove into the water without hesitation.
“Mr. Wood!” someone shouted. “Quick! Someone help! Call an ambulance!”
The housekeeper’s voice was filled with panic, as he watched the unthinkable unfold. Shawn—Mr. Wood—had thrown himself into the lake to save her, even though there were plenty of bodyguards and servants who could have done the job. But no, Shawn had jumped in himself. Why? Because despite everything, despite the hatred, despite their tangled past, she was still his wife.
It was madness. It was fate. And it was chaos.
Shawn swam frantically, his eyes scanning the water for her. The darkness was suffocating, but he could just make out her slowly sinking figure.
Gale closed her eyes, her body limp in the water, unmoving, as if she had completely surrendered to it. Her hand was still resting on her belly, a gesture that spoke volumes more than words ever could.
Shawn’s heart clenched as he pushed himself harder, swimming with all his might. When he reached her, he wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her close, and lifted her to his chest.
She was lifeless, her body heavy in his arms, but he wasn’t about to let go. With a powerful stroke, he swam back to the surface, his lungs burning for air.
The moment they broke through the surface, Shawn gasped for breath, relief flooding through him. He wasn’t going to lose her. Not like this.
With the help of the bodyguards, they managed to pull Gale out of the water. She was soaked, her clothes clinging to her body, her hair matted to her face. Her lips were pale, bloodless, and her entire body looked like a ragdoll in Shawn’s arms.
He said nothing, his mind too full of tumultuous emotions to speak. But his eyes—his eyes softened as he looked at her. No one had ever seen Shawn look so vulnerable, so soft. His gaze lingered on her, full of regret and something deeper, something almost tender. It was a look that no one had ever witnessed before. And for the first time, it was clear: Gale wasn’t just someone he had to control. She was someone he needed.
