Chapter 88
Jared’s expression darkened even further as Nicole’s words hit him.
He had been sitting there, patiently waiting for her to pay him any sort of attention, but instead, she had been completely immersed in her own world, scribbling in her exercise book, seemingly unaware of his presence.
When she finally looked up and asked, “Why are you still here?” her tone was so indifferent, it stung him more than he expected.
It was a simple question, but to Jared, it felt like a slap in the face.
He had thought that perhaps, just perhaps, after spending time together, she might show some interest in him.
But there she was, treating him as if he were just another background noise to her busy life.
He stood up, trying to hide the frustration building inside of him.
His mind raced with the thoughts that maybe this was a mistake, that trying to get close to her was pointless.
“Why are you still here?” Nicole had asked, clearly annoyed, but what Jared saw in her eyes was not irritation—it was indifference.
She had no clue how much her words hurt him.
Jared took a deep breath, forced a smile, and said, “I’m leaving now.” His words were sharp, betraying a hint of the frustration he felt.
His usual charm had failed to make an impression, and now, he was getting tired of playing this game.
Nicole barely seemed to care about what he said, going back to her work without even noticing the tension in his voice.
She was still too focused on the book in front of her to understand the impact of her response.
Jared couldn’t help but feel a sense of disappointment, his patience wearing thin.
He had always been the one to chase after things, but for the first time, he wondered if it was all worth it.
He had tried to show Nicole that he cared, but all she seemed to care about was her own little world.
With a final glance at her, he turned to leave, the frustration building in his chest.
“Enjoy your studies,” he muttered, the words carrying a sharpness he hadn’t meant to let slip.
Nicole, oblivious to the shift in his mood, simply nodded, her attention already back on her book.
The room grew quieter as Jared made his way to the door, and he couldn’t shake the feeling that, no matter how hard he tried, he would always be just another background character in Nicole’s life.
