Chapter 55
Nicole could easily imagine the angry face of Zane Spears on the other side of the screen.
She felt guilty.
She had been too anxious and shouldn’t have answered the call, but she just wanted to make sure Carl was safe and didn’t think things through at the time.
With a sigh, she let out a rare moment of helplessness.
The phone in her hand vibrated again, this time showing an incoming call from Samuel.
Nicole hadn’t expected Samuel to call.
She pressed the answer button and brought the phone to her ear, hearing his energetic voice.
“Do you have time, Nicole? Spencer and I are coming to pick you up.
We’re going out to dinner.”
Nicole checked her schedule.
She didn’t have any afternoon classes and didn’t plan to attend the evening self-study session either.
After a brief pause, she replied, “I’m free afterward.
Wait for me at the school gate, and I’ll meet you there.”
Samuel and Spencer had many fans, so it would be a hassle for them to come to the dorm.
After hanging up, Nicole changed quickly, gave Lulu a heads-up, and left.
Lulu was still busy online, only giving Nicole a quick wave in acknowledgment when she heard her voice.
Nicole glanced at the computer screen and saw dense, glaring red text.
“Wrap it up and get some rest.
I’ll bring you food when I’m back.”
“Okay,” Lulu replied, barely looking up.
Nicole went downstairs, feeling indifferent about the online comments about her.
She wasn’t bothered by them enough to hack into the school’s forum and erase everything, though she could have.
At the school gate, Nicole spotted Samuel waving at her from a distance.
His mouth was moving, and she guessed he was calling her to come over quickly.
Spencer stood some distance away, looking at Samuel with clear distaste.
Nicole smiled, but as she got closer, she noticed Norah standing next to them, giving her a look of displeasure.
Norah had recently moved to the campus and hadn’t had much time with her brothers, which was why she’d asked Samuel and Spencer out.
But seeing them so happy to see Nicole was clearly not what she expected.
Nicole couldn’t help but snicker at the look on Norah’s face.
She walked up to Samuel and put on a deliberately cordial smile.
“Where are we going, Samuel?”
Her sweet smile left Samuel stunned.
“Wh-where are we going?” he stammered, looking blankly at Spencer, as if lost in thought.
“Didn’t you just say you were going to ask Nicole where she wanted to go? Why look at me?” Spencer asked, equally confused.
Norah’s jealousy grew even more intense.
“Samuel, Spencer, I want to eat pasta,” Norah interjected.
“I want grilled fish.
I wonder if there’s any place nearby that sells grilled fish.” Nicole interrupted before Norah could finish.
“There’s none near the school, but I know a great place a little further away.
Let’s take a taxi there,” Samuel suggested immediately.
Samuel had always been very considerate toward Nicole.
Norah couldn’t believe he would ignore her like that, and she pretended to feel slighted.
“Nicole’s new to the school, so she should have the first choice,” Norah said with a pout.
“Yeah, Norah’s so sensible,” Samuel chimed in, smiling.
Norah’s smile froze, her jealousy evident.
She wanted her brothers’ attention but now they were siding with Nicole.
Spencer, sensing Norah’s growing frustration, added, “We’ll have pasta next time.”
“Okay, then,” Norah bit her lip, resigned.
They took a taxi, but with all of them crowding in, it was clear someone would have to sit in the front seat.
Norah tried to claim the front passenger seat, but Samuel, quicker than she expected, was already there, opening the door.
