Chapter 73
Five minutes passed in the blink of an eye, and Jared’s expression grew darker.
The last time they were here, Nicole had ignored him, but now she was doing the same—this time, over math questions? It was a feeling he had never experienced before.
Just then, the food he had ordered for Nicole arrived, and she finally put her book down, ready to eat.
Noticing Jared’s sour mood, Nicole looked at him in confusion.
“What’s up with you?” she asked.
She couldn’t understand why Jared, who had been fine earlier, was now so upset.
“I’m still waiting for your opinion,” Jared replied, his thoughts simmering.
I don’t mind that you ignored me, but did you really forget what I’m waiting for?
Nicole stared at him seriously.
“Haven’t I told you already? It was the best coffee I’ve had.”
Jared frowned.
“That’s all?”
The last time, she had analyzed the coffee, guessing its type or the way it was processed.
But now, she didn’t even bother to elaborate.
Nicole blinked, her expression innocent.
“What else?”
Jared was left speechless.
“Okay, nice.” He gave up trying to get anything more out of her and lowered his head to start eating.
But just as he was about to take a bite, Nicole’s frown deepened.
“What are you doing?”
Jared paused, surprised.
“Eat,” he replied, thinking, Do I need to explain this too?
“Why are you eating with me?” Nicole asked, her brows furrowed further.
She didn’t understand why he felt the need to share a meal with her since they barely knew each other.
Jared almost laughed in disbelief.
Countless women had begged him for dinner dates, but now that he had taken the initiative to invite Nicole, she was rejecting him with such a distant expression.
“I was the one who ordered this food for you,” Jared said, trying to keep his frustration in check.
“Am I not allowed to eat too?”
Nicole’s reply was blunt.
“Though you ordered it, I’m the one who’s going to pay, and I’m not treating anyone.”
Jared was utterly perplexed.
He clapped his hands in mock admiration.
“Okay… Very well, Miss Riddle.
You are a very interesting person.
I’ll pay for the bill this time, alright?”
Nicole raised an eyebrow.
“It’s okay.
I don’t want to owe you anything, so let’s just have our own meals.” She then pulled her salad bowl closer to her, making it clear that she wanted to keep her distance.
It was the first time Jared had ever been embarrassed like that, and some people in the café began to glance over at them.
He couldn’t hold back his frustration anymore.
“Is this how you treat your fiancé?”
Nicole almost spit out her coffee in surprise, quickly grabbing a tissue to wipe her mouth.
She glared at him, irritated.
“Stop joking around, okay? We’ve already decided to break off the engagement.”
Jared’s regret immediately surfaced as he saw her disdainful expression.
He hesitated before asking, “Do you really want to break it off so badly?”
Nicole’s sharp reply caught him off guard.
“Yeah.
Isn’t it the same for you?” she asked.
After all, he was the one who had gone to her house to propose the breakup.
Her words left Jared momentarily speechless.
