Chapter 66
Nicole immediately turned towards the door as the familiar voice of Austin echoed through the hallway.
Her face remained calm, though she couldn’t help but feel a slight unease.
Austin had been persistent in his pursuit of her, and she could already guess what he might want this time.
Lulu, sensing Nicole’s change in demeanor, looked at her with curiosity.
“Is he really here for you again?” she whispered, not understanding the full extent of the situation but sensing the tension in the air.
Nicole didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, she walked to the door, her pace deliberate, each step measured.
As she opened it, Austin stood there, leaning against the frame, a smirk playing on his lips.
“Nicole,” he greeted, his voice smooth and confident.
“I thought we could have a little chat.”
Nicole’s eyes narrowed ever so slightly, but her expression remained unreadable.
“What do you want, Austin?” she asked coolly, her tone carrying a warning undertone.
Austin stepped inside without waiting for an invitation, his eyes scanning the room briefly before landing back on Nicole.
“I wanted to apologize for earlier,” he said, though his words sounded rehearsed, lacking sincerity.
“I didn’t mean to cause any trouble, but sometimes, people just don’t know how to handle things properly.”
Nicole didn’t reply right away, letting the silence stretch between them.
Her gaze never wavered, and she could see right through the facade Austin was trying to put on.
“You’re wasting your time,” she finally said, her voice cold and firm.
Austin’s smirk faltered for a moment, but he quickly recovered, trying to play it off as if he wasn’t affected.
“I just want to make things right,” he insisted, though it was clear that his definition of “making things right” was probably far different from hers.
Lulu watched from the corner, confused by the interaction.
She didn’t fully understand why Nicole seemed so unaffected by Austin’s presence.
“What’s going on?” she asked softly, not wanting to intrude but feeling the need to speak up.
Nicole turned to Lulu, her expression softening ever so slightly.
“It’s nothing,” she replied, her voice reassuring.
“Just a minor inconvenience.”
But as Nicole’s gaze returned to Austin, the subtle tension in her posture made it clear that she was anything but relaxed.
Austin was still standing too close, and his persistent nature was beginning to get under her skin.
“I suggest you leave,” Nicole said, her voice low but commanding.
“Now.”
Austin hesitated, clearly not used to being dismissed so abruptly, but after a long, uncomfortable pause, he finally straightened up.
“Alright,” he said, his tone clipped, as he stepped back toward the door.
“But you’ll regret not hearing me out.”
Nicole didn’t even acknowledge his threat.
As soon as he was gone, she closed the door firmly behind him, taking a deep breath as if to shake off the tension that had built up in the air.
Lulu looked at her, still puzzled.
“Who was that really? What does he want with you?”
Nicole shook her head, smiling faintly.
“Just someone who thinks he can manipulate things for his own benefit.
But it’s not going to work on me.”
Lulu nodded slowly, processing Nicole’s words.
She still didn’t fully understand, but she trusted Nicole’s judgment.
Whatever the situation was, it seemed like Nicole was in control.
As they returned to their seats, the classroom atmosphere felt a little lighter.
But Nicole couldn’t shake the feeling that Austin’s visit was just the beginning.
She had a nagging sense that something more was at play—something she would have to deal with sooner or later.
