Chapter 46
Gary had no idea that Nicole could solve the Maths Olympiad questions so quickly.
For most competitions, she only needed to skim through the problems before answering them at lightning speed.
The long, complicated explanations Mr.
Louis provided were unnecessary for her.
Nicole, however, wasn’t concerned with Gary’s frozen state.
She had chosen a dorm room that morning and hadn’t had the chance to properly check it out yet.
She also hadn’t met her roommates, so she hurried back to the dormitory.
On the way, she overheard bits and pieces of gossip—keywords like “evil” and “campus queen”—but she paid them no mind.
She was more focused on getting to her dorm.
When she arrived, both of her roommates were already there.
Lulu, her more energetic roommate, widened her eyes when she saw Nicole walk in.
Clearly, Lulu hadn’t expected Nicole to be her new roommate.
Nicole also recognized June, the class representative for their English course.
June was hardworking but reserved and had earned the nickname “Nerd” among their peers.
June didn’t acknowledge Nicole, lowering her head and focusing on something else.
Lulu, on the other hand, greeted Nicole enthusiastically.
“So, you’re the new girl! This is fantastic, Nicole! We’re going to stay together from now on!” Nicole simply nodded indifferently, her bed already set up by the Riddle family’s servants.
She unpacked her things, putting her daily necessities in place and locking her laptop in the cabinet above her headboard.
As Nicole began reading a book after getting settled, Lulu approached her with a question.
“Nicole, I heard the Maths Olympiad training class you attend teaches a different syllabus from ours.
Could you tell me about the Olympiad math questions you learned?”
Nicole handed Lulu the pile of example questions from that afternoon’s class.
Lulu’s eyes sparkled.
“Are these for me? I’ve wanted to try the Maths Olympiad questions for so long, but I can’t participate because I’m not good enough.
Thank you, Nicole! I’ll start them now.
Can I ask for help if I get stuck?”
Nicole gave a simple nod, and Lulu excitedly ran back to her spot.
A few minutes later, she returned, looking deflated.
“Nicole, I don’t understand any of these questions.
Could you explain them to me?”
Before Nicole could respond, June, who was absorbed in her studies and wearing headphones, snapped, “Are you done, Lulu Barrera? Some of us are trying to study here.
Do you know how annoying your voice is even with my headphones on?” June had long been irritated by Lulu’s position in the study club despite her average grades, while June, though sitting in the third row of class, was the class representative for English.
Lulu, stung by the scolding, fell silent and looked down in embarrassment.
Nicole glanced at Lulu’s upset expression and then said, “I’m hungry.
I’m heading to the cafeteria.
Are you coming?”
Lulu nodded eagerly, and the two left the dorm.
On the way to the cafeteria, Lulu quietly mentioned how she didn’t understand how her soft voice could disturb June.
Once they had their food and sat down to eat, Lulu once again asked Nicole for help with the Olympiad questions.
Nicole picked a few that suited Lulu’s level and explained them in simple terms.
Lulu’s face lit up as she finally understood.
“Wow, you’re amazing, Nicole! I couldn’t understand this at all when Ms.
Emerson taught it, but now I feel like I get everything after your explanation!”
After they finished eating, they returned to the dorm.
Lulu, still feeling the sting from June’s cold attitude, muttered, “June is way too cold.
You definitely…”
