Chapter_83
Jonah glanced down at his phone, the screen lighting up with an incoming call. It was from Winston.
“Looks like it’s time for another one of his ‘advice sessions,'” Jonah muttered, rolling his eyes. He picked up the phone and answered, putting it on speaker.
“Jonah! It’s me,” Winston’s voice crackled through. “How’s Alyssa doing? She’s there with Don, right? Make sure she doesn’t make any rash decisions, you know how she gets when she’s determined.”
Jonah chuckled, shaking his head. “She’s fine, don’t worry. But if you’re talking about the ores… well, you might want to send Axel a nice reminder to settle the bill. She’s making him foot the costs for the gem cracking.”
Silas burst into laughter at the mention of Axel, earning a raised eyebrow from Jonah. “What’s so funny?”
“Axel’s gonna love that,” Silas said, grinning. “I can already hear him complaining about Alyssa using him like that. But, hey, it serves him right for going against her last time.”
Jonah leaned back, watching the quiet swaying of the trees in the garden. “I don’t get it,” he said thoughtfully. “Alyssa’s always so level-headed, but when it comes to Jasper, it’s like she’s a different person. She can’t seem to let go.”
“Lyse’s heart is stubborn when it comes to love,” Winston responded. “But you know what? Sometimes we just have to let her figure it out herself. She’s not a child anymore.”
Jonah stared at his tea, swirling it gently. “I know. But I don’t like seeing her hurt. And I’m pretty sure the Becketts aren’t the only ones making her feel that way. Jasper… well, he hasn’t exactly been a model husband.”
Winston sighed deeply on the other end. “You’ve got that right. But we all know how the Taylors are. Once someone is part of the family, they can’t easily be pushed out. We’ve got to wait for Alyssa to come to her own conclusions. But we can’t just let her be swept away, either.”
Silas, who had been listening in, raised his voice with a smirk. “You’re talking about letting Lyse deal with things herself, but you’re still keeping track of everything she does. Face it, Jonah. You’re just as protective as the rest of us.”
Jonah gave Silas a side glance but didn’t respond. He couldn’t deny it—he was just as invested in Alyssa’s happiness, even if it meant stepping back and letting her face the consequences of her decisions.
The call with Winston continued in the background, but Jonah’s mind drifted back to the current situation. Alyssa’s moods had been unpredictable lately, and with everything going on with the Becketts, it felt like things were only going to get more complicated.
“I know you both think I’m too overbearing at times, but let’s just keep an eye on Lyse,” Jonah finally said, after a long pause. “If she’s really determined to handle things herself, I’ll respect that. But I can’t stand by and let her go through everything alone, especially with Jasper being… well, Jasper.”
Silas raised an eyebrow at Jonah, clearly impressed. “Look at you, big brother, growing a conscience. Alright, I’m with you. Let’s just keep tabs on her, and if she needs us, we’ll be ready.”
Jonah nodded, his fingers tapping lightly on the teacup. “I think that’s the best we can do. We don’t have to interfere as long as she knows we’re here if she needs us.”
The air around them was calm, but Jonah could sense that the storm wasn’t far behind. The Taylor siblings were powerful, influential, and respected. But when it came to family, things had a way of getting personal, messy, and complicated. And right now, it felt like the balance between standing by Alyssa’s side and respecting her independence was fragile at best.
For now, though, the only thing they could do was wait and watch—like they always did when it came to matters of the heart.
