The tension in the room was palpable as Jasper’s gaze swept over the group, landing on Liana, who was visibly trembling in her bed. She put on her best innocent act, clutching the blanket tighter as if it could shield her from his intense stare.
Sophia, however, wasn’t going to back down easily. She stood up, attempting to put herself between Jasper and Liana, her posture rigid. “Jasper, please, can’t you see? Liana’s been through enough today. She’s exhausted, and you have no idea what kind of shock she’s suffered.”
Jasper’s eyes narrowed slightly, his voice cold and measured. “I don’t care how much shock she’s gone through. This isn’t about how she feels. It’s about what happened. And I need the truth from her.” He turned his attention back to Liana, his gaze unwavering.
Liana’s heart raced, but she tried to hold her composure. She couldn’t let Jasper find out the truth—not when everything was so carefully constructed. If he knew, it would all unravel, and her chances with him would be over.
“Jasper, I… I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Liana stammered, her voice shaky. She let a small sob escape, playing the part of the fragile, hurt woman perfectly. “Please, I swear I didn’t do anything wrong.”
But Jasper wasn’t buying it. He took a step forward, his presence overwhelming as he reached her bedside. “I don’t believe you, Liana,” he said, his voice low but firm. “You’ve made a mess of everything. I’ve given you a chance, but you’re running out of them. Now, I need to hear the truth, and I need to hear it from you.”
Sophia’s face turned pale, and her hands clenched into fists at her sides. “Jasper, you’re being too harsh! Liana has been through enough, don’t you think? You can’t just accuse her like that.”
Jasper’s gaze flicked briefly toward Sophia, then back to Liana. He wasn’t here for excuses. He wasn’t here for sympathy. “I don’t care what you think, Sophia. I’m not leaving until I get answers. I’m giving you one last chance, Liana. Did you or did you not cause Alice’s injury?”
Liana’s heart skipped a beat. She opened her mouth to speak, but before the words could form, the door opened again, and Mandy’s voice interrupted.
“Jasper,” Mandy called, stepping into the room with a calm but assertive presence. “Let me handle this. Liana’s been through enough, and I’m sure we don’t need to drag this on further. Whatever happened, it’s between the families now, not something for a public spectacle.”
Jasper turned to look at Mandy, his features softening slightly as he met her gaze. She stood tall, exuding authority, yet there was a gentleness in her demeanor that he couldn’t ignore. For a moment, he considered her words, then slowly nodded, his frustration still evident in his posture.
“Fine. But mark my words, Liana,” he added, his voice sharp again, “I’m not done with this.”
With that, he turned on his heel and left the room, the heavy silence that followed his departure filling the air.
Rosaline exhaled a breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding, while Sophia’s face darkened in frustration. “This is far from over,” she muttered, her eyes flicking between Liana and Mandy.
Liana sat back against her pillow, breathing a little easier now that the immediate confrontation was over. But she knew this wasn’t the end. Jasper was still watching. The truth was still out there. And the web of lies was becoming harder to maintain.
As the door clicked shut behind him, Mandy turned back to Liana, her expression soft but serious. “You’re going to have to face this sooner or later. And when you do, you better be ready to deal with the consequences.”
