Chapter_39
The punch landed squarely on Jasper’s cheek, and he staggered back, his hand instinctively shooting up to his face. His expression, which had been stormy only moments before, now twisted with a blend of anger and disbelief. The sharp sting of the blow still lingered, but what really hit him was the fury behind it.
“You son of a—!” the man who had thrown the punch growled, his face flushed with rage. It was none other than Jonah, Alyssa’s boyfriend.
Landon, who had been watching the scene unfold with a mixture of amusement and tension, raised an eyebrow at the sudden appearance of Jonah. He chuckled darkly, crossing his arms. “Well, well, looks like someone’s not too happy about your little performance, Jasper.”
Jasper wiped his mouth, his eyes flashing with irritation. “What the hell are you doing here, Jonah?” he spat, wiping away the trace of blood from his lip. His hand was still clenched in a fist, but he didn’t make a move to retaliate. Instead, he stood still, trying to suppress the boiling frustration inside him.
Jonah didn’t flinch, his gaze hardening as he approached Jasper, his posture radiating aggression. “You really think you can just waltz into Alyssa’s life, after everything you’ve done, and treat her like this? You think you can keep interfering and pushing her around?”
Landon stepped in, his tone still playful despite the rising tension. “Jonah, my man, relax. This guy’s got a way of pushing people’s buttons. But I think he’s had enough of a lesson for today. No need to turn this into a full-blown war.”
Jonah didn’t take his eyes off Jasper. “You know damn well I won’t let you mess with her anymore,” he snapped, his voice low but dangerous. “Alyssa’s been through enough, and if you think I’m going to stand by while you try to manipulate her again, you’re sorely mistaken.”
Jasper’s jaw tightened. The words Jonah had said to him earlier echoed in his mind. “I don’t care what you think about me and Alyssa. I’ve already decided what’s best for her. You might be her boyfriend, but you have no idea what she’s really going through.”
Jonah stepped closer, his breath heavy with anger. “You don’t get to decide for her anymore. You lost that right the moment you walked out on her.” His voice was a controlled fury, each word filled with disdain.
Landon, sensing things were about to escalate further, finally stepped between them, his hand raised in a gesture of peace. “Alright, alright. Enough of the testosterone-filled drama. Let’s get it together, shall we? No need for more punches or threats today. Everyone’s already riled up enough.”
Jonah’s eyes flickered toward Landon, then back to Jasper. “Stay out of this, Landon. I’m not done with him.”
Jasper looked up, his eyes narrowing as he locked onto Jonah. “You’re right, I messed up. But that doesn’t mean I’ll just let you act like the hero in Alyssa’s life.” His voice was cold, calculated. “But I’m done. I’m done fighting for her. She’s already moved on, and I’m not going to keep dragging her through this anymore.”
Jonah sneered. “You say that now, but I know what you’re really feeling. It’s always been about control with you, hasn’t it? You can’t stand seeing her happy without you.”
Landon watched the exchange, his eyes flicking between the two men, and felt a pang of something he couldn’t quite place. Was it jealousy? Or frustration? Either way, this was quickly turning into something more than a simple confrontation. He stepped back, giving them both space.
The tension between them thickened as they stood there, unwilling to back down, until a nurse came running down the hallway.
“Are you all alright?” she asked, looking between the three men. Her expression flickered between concern and confusion as she took in the situation. “Miss White is asking for you both,” she added, gesturing toward the clinic door.
Jonah and Jasper shared a final, intense look, but neither spoke. With a grunt, Jonah turned and followed the nurse, his anger still simmering just beneath the surface. Jasper lingered for a moment longer, his gaze dark as he clenched his fists. He didn’t follow them immediately, but he knew what he had to do.
Landon, watching all of this unfold, couldn’t help but smirk. “You’re one hell of a mess, Jasper.”
Jasper didn’t respond, his mind too preoccupied with the anger, confusion, and guilt swirling inside him. He didn’t want to admit it, but Alyssa’s words were still echoing in his mind, even louder now.
He wasn’t sure what was worse—losing her, or losing the chance to truly understand who she had become.
