Chapter_53
The words lingered in the air like a heavy fog, and Jasper stood there, unmoving, his thoughts tumbling in a whirlwind of confusion and regret. He had never expected Alyssa to turn so sharply against him, her words cutting through him in ways he hadn’t prepared for. It was as if the woman he once knew had been replaced by someone stronger, more resolute, and completely indifferent to him.
Alyssa’s eyes had hardened, her pain masked by a façade of anger and determination. She had always been the calm one, the one who bore her burdens in silence, but now she was breaking free from the cage that had once held her. And in doing so, she was breaking something inside of him too.
He thought back to the moments when they were together, when the world seemed simpler, when everything felt right. He had never fully understood what he had until it was gone. And now, he was standing here, watching her walk away, and all he could feel was a bitter emptiness.
The brief moment of vulnerability she had shown earlier was long gone, replaced by a fierce determination to move on without him. He didn’t know what hurt more—the words she said or the fact that she had already moved beyond him. Alyssa had been right. Their relationship had lingered in a state of decay, and it was he who had failed to recognize it before it was too late.
“Jasper, don’t stand there looking like that,” Sean said, his voice laced with concern but also a tinge of caution. “You’ve done enough. Leave it be.”
But it was impossible for Jasper to just let it go. He felt like he was being pulled in two directions—toward the wreckage of his past with Alyssa, and away from it, into the uncertain future she was already building without him. The more he tried to hold on to her, the more he felt like he was slipping through his own fingers.
He had never truly understood Alyssa’s strength until now, until it was too late. She had given him everything, and in return, he had taken it all for granted. And now, she was walking away from the very thing he had foolishly discarded.
As he stood there, watching Sean support Alyssa, the finality of the situation hit him hard. He wasn’t just losing a woman; he was losing the version of himself that had been with her. The self he had been before the mistakes, before the betrayal, before the irreparable damage.
He closed his eyes for a moment, trying to steady himself, but the weight of his own actions was too much to bear. Alyssa, I’ve lost you, and there’s no coming back from this.
