Chapter_40
Sean’s face darkened immediately as Alyssa’s words hit him. He clenched his fists, his eyes narrowing in fury. “Jasper Beckett,” he muttered under his breath, the name heavy with disdain.
Alyssa, sensing his anger, placed a hand on his arm. “It’s fine, Sean. I’m okay,” she said softly, trying to calm him down. Her voice carried the weight of exhaustion, but her composure never faltered.
Sean, though, wasn’t as composed. “He’s lucky I wasn’t there when it happened,” he growled. “That man doesn’t know how to treat a woman. No one hurts you like this and gets away with it.” His voice was filled with venom, a stark contrast to Alyssa’s calm demeanor.
Landon, observing the escalating tension, stepped in. “We don’t need to make things worse right now. Alyssa’s safe, and that’s all that matters.” He shot a quick look at Jasper, who was standing by, still seething but holding back.
Jasper’s eyes were locked on Alyssa and Silas, who were now a few steps ahead. He felt a pang of jealousy as Silas gently guided Alyssa, her arm protected by his. It wasn’t just the physical closeness that bothered him—it was the fact that Silas had become someone who could easily step into the role he had once occupied. That, more than anything, infuriated him.
Landon noticed Jasper’s clenched jaw and the way his eyes burned with frustration. “You should just let her go, man,” he said quietly, his voice tinged with empathy but also the harsh reality of the situation. “She’s moved on, and you’re only hurting yourself by holding on.”
Jasper didn’t respond immediately. He knew Landon was right, but the bitter taste of rejection lingered. He had always taken Alyssa for granted, never fully appreciating her presence until it was too late. Now, watching her walk away with Silas, he couldn’t help but feel that familiar ache in his chest.
“Do you think she’ll ever look at me the same way again?” Jasper’s voice was barely a whisper, the question hanging in the air between him and Landon.
Landon didn’t have an answer. He just gave him a look that spoke volumes—there was no simple fix for this kind of mess. Alyssa had suffered too much at his hands, and now she was trying to rebuild her life without him.
As Alyssa and Silas disappeared around the corner, Jasper felt the sting of regret, sharp and unforgiving. He had lost her, and there was no going back.
