Chapter_85
Axel raised an eyebrow, his expression amused as he watched Silas struggle to regain his balance after missing the kick. “Careful there, Silas,” he said with a smirk, his voice laced with sarcasm. “You might hurt yourself.”
Silas gritted his teeth, trying to suppress the urge to throw another punch. “You think you’re funny, don’t you?” he snapped, but there was a hint of admiration in his eyes. Axel’s agility was unmatched, and Silas had learned that firsthand on many occasions.
“Just making sure you’re on your toes,” Axel replied, his grin widening. “But seriously, don’t you think you should let your sister have a bit of peace? She’s been through a lot.”
Silas let out a frustrated breath, leaning against the wall with his arms crossed. “I know, but it bugs me seeing you spoil her like that. You’re the only one who can make her break down like that, and you just waltz in, giving her a bar of chocolate? She deserves so much more, and you know it.”
Axel’s smile faded slightly, and he placed his hands in his pockets, his posture relaxing. “You think I don’t know that?” His voice was quieter now, more serious. “But sometimes, the smallest gestures mean the most. It’s not about giving her the world, Silas. It’s about being there when she needs someone to hold her up. She’s always so strong, but even the strongest need a break.”
Silas didn’t respond immediately. He shifted his weight, the tension in his shoulders easing slightly. Axel was right—Alyssa had always carried the weight of the world on her shoulders, and sometimes, just being there for her was enough.
“You’re not completely wrong,” Silas muttered, glancing toward the room where Alyssa rested. “But I still don’t get why you had to make such an entrance. You could’ve just called her or something.”
Axel chuckled softly, his eyes flicking to the door where he had just left his sister. “A call wouldn’t have done it. She needed to see me. We’ve been apart too long.”
Silas couldn’t argue with that. Axel had always been the one to pull through when Alyssa needed him most, even if it was in ways Silas didn’t always understand. He felt a pang of jealousy, but it wasn’t just about the affection Axel showed his sister—it was about how easily Axel seemed to break through the walls Alyssa had built around herself. Silas had always been her protector, but there was something about Axel that made him a different kind of presence in her life.
After a long pause, Silas sighed, his tone softening. “I just hate seeing her like this… not knowing what to do. With everything going on with Jasper and Newton, she’s torn, and I don’t know how to fix it for her.”
Axel nodded, his face thoughtful. “It’s not about fixing it, Silas. It’s about letting her figure it out on her own. She’s stronger than we give her credit for. But when she’s ready, we’ll be here for her. We always are.”
The weight of Axel’s words lingered in the air, and Silas felt the truth of them settle in. Alyssa had always been able to handle more than anyone gave her credit for, but sometimes, she needed space to find her own answers.
Axel turned to leave the hallway, his footsteps echoing softly against the floor. “You should get some rest too, Silas. You’ve been at this for a while now.”
“Yeah, yeah,” Silas muttered, but he didn’t protest. As much as he wanted to stay on guard, he knew Axel was right. He needed to recharge too.
As Axel disappeared down the hall, Silas couldn’t help but glance toward the door to the guest room, where his sister slept peacefully. It was a rare sight, and a part of him wished she didn’t have to face the storm inside her heart alone.
But for now, all he could do was be there when she woke up. And when the time came, he’d be ready to help her in whatever way she needed.
