Chapter_87
“Jasper?” Alyssa asked, trying to sound indifferent, though she could feel a knot tightening in her chest. “What did he want?”
Jonah shifted uncomfortably beside her, his usual calm demeanor replaced with a hint of hesitation. “He… wanted to talk. He said he was sorry for everything that happened between you two.”
Alyssa clenched her jaw, her grip on the jewelry box tightening. Sorry? She let out a quiet, bitter laugh, but it quickly faded into a deep sigh.
“Did he?” she replied, her voice barely above a whisper. “And did you tell him I’m done listening to his apologies?”
Jonah stayed silent for a moment, glancing at his brothers who were focused on the road ahead. The air in the car grew tense, thick with the weight of the past.
“I didn’t say anything,” Jonah finally answered. “But I know you’re hurt. And I know it’s hard to just let go of something like that. I only wanted to tell you because he seemed genuine, for once.”
Alyssa’s eyes flickered to the box in her hands, the weight of it almost mirroring the emotional burden she carried. Her thoughts drifted to her past with Jasper—those years of trying to hold onto something that was never really there.
“I don’t know if I can believe him anymore,” she murmured softly. “He always said things that sounded nice, but his actions never matched up. And now… now, it feels too late.”
The car slowed as they approached the city. The familiar lights of Solana City blinked in the distance, but Alyssa’s mind was far away, tangled in memories she wished she could forget. Despite everything, there was still a small part of her that longed for closure.
Jonah noticed her distant look and placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. “You don’t have to forgive him, Lyse. Not if you don’t want to. But remember, you’re not alone. We’re all here for you, no matter what.”
Alyssa looked up at her brother, her heart swelling with gratitude for the unshakable support he and the others always offered. But deep down, she knew she had to make peace with herself before anything else could change.
“Thanks, Jonah,” she whispered, the warmth of his words providing some comfort. “I just… need time.”
As the car continued toward home, the siblings sat in silence, each of them lost in their thoughts. Alyssa clutched the jewelry box, a tangible reminder of the past she could never fully escape, but also a symbol of the future she was beginning to carve for herself. No matter what Jasper’s intentions were, it was clear now that she had the strength to move forward.
And this time, it would be on her terms.
