Chapter_55
Jasper’s eyes were clouded with frustration as he approached the door, his steps slow but purposeful. His mind was still heavy with thoughts of Alyssa—of everything he had lost and the bitter emptiness that gnawed at him. Yet, as he neared the entrance, the faint sound of Liana’s cries cut through his thoughts, sharp and desperate.
The image of her sitting outside, sobbing and clutching at her dignity, left a bitter taste in his mouth. He had once been ensnared by her manipulations, the sweetness of her words and the hollow promises of love. Now, her behavior seemed pathetic, almost laughable. What did she think she could achieve by acting like this?
Rosie’s mocking tone echoed in his ears. “What a cheap act! Only a fool would fall for this trick!” And for once, Jasper found himself in complete agreement. He wasn’t that fool anymore. He wasn’t the man who would bend to Liana’s whims. He had grown, whether he liked it or not.
Stepping outside, he saw Liana huddled on the ground, her face streaked with tears, her posture one of defiance and desperation. Her pleas for his attention rang in the air, as if she could will him to return to her with a few well-timed cries. Her attempts at manipulating him were painfully familiar. But this time, it wasn’t working.
Jasper stood a few feet away, his gaze cold and unreadable. “Enough, Liana,” he said, his voice firm, his tone distant.
Liana looked up, her tear-streaked face twisting in shock at the sight of him. “Jasper, please! Don’t ignore me! I need you! I can’t live without you!” Her voice cracked with desperation, but it only seemed to push him further away.
“I’m done with this, Liana. I’m done with you,” Jasper continued, his words final and unyielding. He had seen through her act, and now there was nothing left to keep him tethered to the past. His heart had already closed off, and the man standing before her was no longer the same man who once put up with her games.
Liana scrambled to her feet, her face a mixture of rage and disbelief. “You—You can’t just do this! You can’t throw me away like this! What about everything we had?”
Jasper’s gaze hardened. “You were never the one for me, Liana. Not like Alice was. She’s the one I should have cared about, the one I should have fought for. But I failed her, and now I’ll pay the price for it.” The raw pain in his voice was more to himself than to her.
Liana, her face flushed with a mix of anger and disbelief, took a step forward. “You think it’s over just because you say it is? You can’t just pretend like I never meant anything to you!”
“I don’t need your drama, Liana,” Jasper responded coldly. “You’ve had your chance. And I won’t make the same mistake again.”
His words hit like a slap, and Liana froze, the anger and pain momentarily giving way to a creeping fear. She opened her mouth to say something, but no words came. She could only stare at him in stunned silence.
Rosie, standing in the background, watched the scene unfold with a small, knowing smile. She had seen this coming, had known that Jasper would eventually see through Liana’s act. His heart, once clouded by guilt and confusion, had begun to clear.
“Good riddance,” Rosie muttered under her breath, before turning back toward the house. She had made it clear to Liana that her attempts to manipulate Jasper were futile, and the sight of Liana’s defeated expression only confirmed it.
Jasper, standing tall, took one last look at Liana, the woman who had once held so much power over him, before turning on his heel and walking back into the house. His mind wasn’t on her anymore, wasn’t on the past or the mistakes he had made.
His mind was on what came next—on the woman he had lost and the impossible task of finding his way back to her. But he couldn’t let that define him anymore.
He would face the consequences of his actions, but he would never make the same mistake again.
